Structural equation model is a multivariate statistical data analysis method for examining the causal relation under the multivariate normality assumption in various fields. Structural equation model uses continuous quantitative variables and ordinal qualitative variables for which normal distribution can be assumed. However, ordinal variables are not continuous variables, strictly speaking. Therefore, it can suffer problems of lack of fit and distortion on interpretation due to the variable misspecification and violation of normality assumption. In this study, we propose two approaches to solve such problems. Firstly, we propose to apply Jitter transformation on ordinal variables to continuous variables. Second, we propose to use Bayesian approach which allows us to apply discrete probability distribution including binomial distribution and multinomial distribution instead of normal distribution.
In order to examine the effect of two proposed methods, we analyzed Italian ryegrass yield, climate and soil data by using structural equation model. The data include yield variables (dry matter yield and fresh matter yield) and climate variables (autumnal growing days, autumnal accumulative temperature, spring growing days, spring accumulative temperature, spring rainfall and spring rainfall days) all of which are continuous quantitative variables and soil variables (efficient soil depth, slope, drainage classes, gravel content) which are ordinal variables. The analysis results showed that soil variables seriously distorted the results of structural equation model. All effects of climate factors on yield factors are plausible, although the path effects from soil factors (slope is steepy and gravel content is high) to yield factors were estimated positive. This distortion was not resulted from either confounded effects or data sampling procedure by the comparison with the ordinary regression result.
After Jitter transformation, the p-value of distorted path was declined from 0.046 to 0.039 and Akaike Information Criterion was declined from 1386.220 to 1341.560, which mean that goodness of fit was improved. However, the distortion was not corrected because coefficient of path was not changed. The result of Bayesian method with binomial-beta distribution or multinomial-dirichlet distribution, the distortion of the path from soil factors to yield factors was corrected. Moreover, Deviance Information Criterion was the smallest in the analysis with multinomial-dirichlet distribution, which was the best fitted model.
In this paper, when structural equation model is applied to the data with ordinal variables under no normality assumption, Bayesian approach is a good choice. Also, Jitter transformation can be an alternative to improve both goodness of fit and parsimony of modeling without serious distortion. Especially, they can be helpful in research with Likert scale when structural equation model is used.
