This essay aims to illuminate each other through Comparative Study on the Novel The Daughters of Pharmacist Kim and the Film The Daughters of Pharmacist Kim. Earlier Studies on the Novel pay attention to a world view of fatalism which is considered as the character of Romanticism. This essay discuss the Novel show the character of Realism as well as Romanticism. Such point of view is supported by the earlier discussion on the whole literature of Park, Kyung-Ri and Comparative Study with the Film directed by Yu, Hyun-Mok who is estimated as ‘a Realist Film Director’. This essay discuss the Romantic World coexists with the Realistic World in the Novel, while the two worlds are separated in the Film. This essay make clear such aspects of the Novel and film focusing on Character, Story, and Plot.
The leading characters of the Novel fall in love with a forbidden person. Consequently, they play an important role in the ruin of Kim's family, realizing the fatalistic prophecy which characterize the work as Romantic Novel. They also take part in the realistic world, namely both economic and political actuality. So, the Romantic World coexist with the Realistic World by the medium of them in the Novel. On the contrary, The leading characters of the Film are characterized having nothing to do with the forbidden love. And they are separated from the characters who believe in fatalism combined with shamanism and connected with the characters who cope with the economic and political actuality. Such aspects of characterization show dichotomous representation between the Realistic World and the Romantic World in the Film.
Such an aspects are revealed through the development of Story and Plot, too. The main story of the Novel is the ruin of Kim's family, that is the death of family and financial failure. The Plot of this Story is developed by a fatalistic causal relationship combined with shamanism. The Novel also develops the Story of another family(the family of Pharmacist Kim's cousin) connected with the reality of the Age of Japanese Imperialism as sub-plot. The sub-plot intrude into the main plot, that is the Story of the Kim's family. The Film place a great deal of weight the Story of Kim's family, that is the death of family and financial failure. The Plot of the former is developed by a fatalistic causal relationship lime the Novel. By the way, The Plot of the latter is developed by realistic causal relationship unlikely the Novel. And the Plot of the former is not articulated with the Plot of the latter. Through these aspects, this essay make clear in the Novel the Romantic World coexist with the Realistic World, while in the Film the two worlds are separated dichotomously.
This essay take notice of the man intellectuals who appear as attendant character in the Novel. They observe the Fatalistic World from Realistic point of view. The man intellectuals play an important role in the end of the Film. The Film have a happy ending different from the Novel. The happy ending of the Film means the disappearance of the Fatalistic World and the will of economic reconstruction. The assertion of this essay is supported by these aspects.
