Stories of the obscure, plain, and little, long overshadowed by the tales of kings and heroes in history textbooks, have slowly begun gaining focus in history education for schoolchildren. Such subject matter is precisely what Dear America ― the historical fiction series published by Scholastic Press, highly regarded by teachers and parents, and popularly used as supplementary teaching material in middle school classrooms ― aims to deal with. Each book of the series, written in diary form by a girl similar in age to the reader and set during pivotal moments in American history, allows young readers to comprehend that period through the everyday lives and emotions of their historical peers. As the editors have stressed, purpose of these books is to “give voice to those who historically were denied it.” In fact, the narrative structure of young protagonists from minority backgrounds overcoming discrimination to finally succeed in transforming into We American is one of the popular repertoires of this series. What is primarily empathized here is obviously the political incorrectness of racial, ethnic, and cultural discrimination and prejudice that split us, as well as the success stories of protagonists who surmount these barriers after suffering trials at the hands of their peer groups, neighbors, or families. Nevertheless, it is interesting to note how these insignif icant voices from the past, instead of representing the mentalite of the historical period, make frequent references to what are considered core American values today. Without subtle explanation on whether it would have been possible for a girl of twelve or thirteen to elucidate such value and identity in her Sitz im Leben at the time, if she would truly have wished herself to voice out that way, it may result in trivializing the very obstacles, trials, and tribulations of the people who lived during that time. Moreover, dialogues such as “in America, learning in schools is not just for boys” or “what is it about this country that makes one dream such big dreams?” repetitively appear without any explanation or historical context of the women`s suffrage and labor movement; this reveals problems of decontextualized textualization. Such historical decontextualization solidifies the barrier of ever-so-charming We American ― a narrative that would accord well with present interests. Though the protagonists of those diaries might have crossed the fences to be included, the still more sturdy fence named “We” would provide grounds to exclude less nationalized and less exemplary people. By problematizing such fences, this article aims to identify and analyze the narrative of exclusive inclusion in the specific texts of three diaries from the Dear America series that deal with the voices of minorities with a focus on contemporary history : 1) With the Might of Angels, a diary of the first colored student attending a previously all-white school in Virginia, 1954; 2) Dreams in the Golden Country, a diary of a Jewish immigrant settling in a Jewish community in New York City, 1903; and 3) The Fences Between Us, a diary of a girl experiencing inner conflict and confusion following the incarceration of Japanese neighbors in Seattle in 1941.
