이기영의 작품에 나타난 여성현실과 그 전개방식 : 초기 경향소설을 중심으로 Focusing on his early 'Tendency Novels' = Women's Reality and It's Representation in the Novels of Lee Ki-Young

Minchon, Lee, Ki-young is a writer who represents Korean 'Tendency Literature' under the reign of Japan. It is generally admitted that he holds on to the idea of realism for his literary world.
The purpose of this thesis is to analysize the real circumstances which the women in the colonial period confronted and show how he dealt with women's problems in his novels. Such an approach is a way to evaluate his achievement as a realist, since women's reality should be represented as an important part of that of a whole society.
Under such a hypothesis, the early novels, The Secret Letter by My Brother, The Poor, The Father with Five Brothers and Sisters, and Folk Village are examined. From the Study, a conclusion with three main points is reached. First, the women were mal-treated and suppressed, almost regardless of whatever status they had. The degree of pressures under which they led their lives could be different, depending on whether she was a girl of a middle-class, or housewives and girls in rural areas with little education and money. The social status, however, didn't bring much difference to the quality of each one's life. Furthermore, the traditional patriarchal system combined with the specific conditions of the colonial period, to bring undue persecution on the women in that period.
What is more important is that the writer's point of view is governed by the rigidity of a prejudiced and male-oriented ideology and by the narrow dichotomy against women. He implicitly accepts male protagonists' false value system, in which they separate women's reality from the social realtiy and a domestic culture from that of a general society, and regard the sacrifices and sufferings of women as natural consequences of femininity. Moreover, he squints toward such biased attitudes and eventually comes to ignore and hide the reality of the absurd situations in which the women suffered.
In the long run, his subjective point of view against women fails to look into both women's wretched existence and the spirit of the times and organize them more objectively and comprehensively. Naturally, such an attitude loses much of his achievement as a realist.
