In the first part of the study, silica fibers were fabricated by sol-gel reaction during electrospinning process. A high voltage source of electricity was applied to the prepared spinning solution to form the fibers. Macroporous silica fibers were prepared using polystyrene (PS) nanospheres as a templates after calcination. The pore size could be controlled by adjusting the diameter of PS nanospheres in the spinning solution. To this end, PS nanospheres with different diameters (250, 430, 600, 870, and 1000 nm) were synthesized by the dispersion polymerization method. Because there exists hydrophilic surface on silica fibers, the coating film composed of the fibers showed superhydrophilicity, which is not suitable for adsorbing oil contaminant. Thus, silane coupling agents were used to modify the surface of the porous fibers to obtain hydrophobic and water-repellent property due to the presence of methyl groups. As a result, we could measure the adsorbed amount oil using the porous silica fibers modified with various kinds of coupling agent or PS nanospheres with different sizes to investigate their effects on oil adsorption. When the size of macropores in the fibers increased, the amount of adsorbed oil increased, because the infiltration of oil through the pores became easier. Small hydrophobic group of the silane coupling agent like methyl group was more advantageous to adsorb more amount of oil compared to bulky functional groups. The oil adsorption capacity of the porous fibers was measured as larger value compared to that of meso-macroporous silica particles, since the voids between the fibers might provide additional space for oil adsorption.
In the second part of this study, the Taylor-vortex reactor was utilized to synthesize silica nanoparticles from a sodium silicate solution and carbon dioxide. The exceptional advantages of this reactor were demonstrated by comparing the synthesis results of silica nanoparticles with those obtained using an Erlenmeyer reactor. The effects of the rotation speed of the inner cylinder of the Taylor-vortex reactor, the concentration of the sodium silicate solution, and the reaction temperature were investigated regarding the properties of the synthesized silica particles. The results indicated that silica particles synthesized from the Taylor-vortex reactor were smaller in size compared to those synthesized from the Erlenmeyer reactor. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and histograms depicting the particle size distribution obtained from the experiments clearly demonstrated that the concentration of SiO2 in the solution, the reaction temperature, and the rotation speed of the cylinder significantly influenced both the morphology and size of the silica particles.
The silica particles synthesized using the aforementioned method were subjected to surface treatment to enhance their oil adsorption capabilities. Surface treatment plays a crucial role in modifying the surface properties of the particles, enabling them to effectively adsorb oil molecules. The surface treatment process involves various techniques such as functionalization, coating, or modification with specific chemical agents. The purpose of surface treatment is to create a hydrophobic surface on the silica particles, which enhances their affinity for oil and improves their oil adsorption capacity. By transforming the surface hydroxyl groups into hydrophobic functional groups using appropriate chemical agents, the particles' surface becomes more oleophilic, facilitating the attraction and retention of oil molecules. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the surface treatment was evaluated by conducting oil adsorption tests on the treated silica particles. These tests encompassed subjecting the particles to oil exposure and quantifying the oil adsorbed per unit mass of particles. Through the quantification of oil adsorption capacity, the efficiency and effectiveness of the surface treatment method can be evaluated. The results obtained from the oil adsorption tests offer valuable insights into the performance of the surface-treated silica particles, showcasing their remarkable ability to adsorb and retain oil. This characteristic holds crucial importance in various applications, including oil spill remediation, wastewater treatment, and environmental cleanup.
