조선 왕실 태실수호사찰의 역사적 유래와 기능 = Historical Origin and Function of the Guardian Temples of the Placenta Chamber of the Joseon Dynasty

This thesis is a study that analyzes the historical background and role of Guardian Temples of the Placenta Chamber installed by the Joseon royal family.
In Korea, there has been a custom of valuing the placenta of a newborn child since ancient times. After the influx of Buddhism, a new form of culture was formed in which temples around the placenta chamber prayed for the happiness of the placenta owner. The Joseon royal family, which inherited the tradition of Guardian Temples of the Placenta Chamber in the Goryeo Dynasty, began to install Guardian Temples of the Placenta Chamber from the beginning of the founding of the country, and this continued until the reign of King Gojong.
In this paper, as a result of investigating Guardian Temples of the Placenta Chamber in the Joseon Dynasty, it was confirmed that 17 temples were related to placenta chambers. Among them, eight temples, including Taejo's Bongseo Temple, clearly reveal the fact that they protected the Placenta Chamber, and the remaining nine temples are presumed to have been in charge of protecting the Placenta Chamber. From the reign of King Taejo to the reign of King Gojong, it was confirmed that the tradition of protecting the Placenta Chamber by the Joseon royal family by designating a temple near the placenta chamber continued.
The role of Guardian Temples of the Placenta Chamber in the Joseon Dynasty can be roughly divided into two categories. The first is the role for the owner of the placenta chamber. When a placenta chamber was prepared around a temple, the temple prayed for longevity and peace of the placenta owner.
The second is the management and protection of the Placenta Chamber. Placenta Chambers were often prepared deep in the mountains, so the Joseon Dynasty entrusted the management and protection of Placenta Chambers to designated temples located around them. In addition, when the Placenta Chamber was newly built or repaired, monks from nearby temples were mobilized to work on the Placenta Chamber.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 조선 왕실에서 설치한 태실수호사찰의 역사적 배경과 기능을 고찰한 연구이다.
한국에서는 예로부터 갓난아이의 태를 중시하는 풍습이 이어졌는데, 불교 유입 이후 태실 주변의 사찰이 태 주인의 복락을 비는 형태의 문화가 형성되었다. 고려 태실수호사찰의 전통을 계승한 조선 왕실은 건국초부터 태실수호사찰을 설치하기 시작했고 이는 조선말까지 계속 이어졌다.
본고에서는 조선시대 태실수호사찰을 조사한 결과 총 17개의 사찰이 태실과 관련이 있음을 확인하였다. 이 중 태실을 수호한 사실이 문헌상에서 분명하게 드러나는 사찰은 태조의 봉서사 등 8곳이고, 나머지 9곳은 태실수호 역을 담당했을 것으로 추정되는 사찰이다.
조선시대 태실수호사찰이 담당한 역할을 크게 두 가지로 첫 번째는 태실 주인의 축수 역할이다. 사찰 주변에 태실이 마련되면 해당 사찰은 태실 주인의 무병장수와 평안을 발원했다. 둘째는 태실의 관리와 보호이다. 태실은 깊은 산중에 마련되는 경우가 많았기 때문에 조선왕조는 태실 주변에 위치한 사찰을 지정해 태실의 관리와 보호를 맡겼다. 또한 태실이 새롭게 조성되거나 보수 공사가 이루어질 때에도 인근 사찰의 승려들을 동원해 태실 공사에 투입시켰다.
후대로 갈수록 태실수호사찰의 역할은 태실의 관리 보호에 집중되었으며, 태실수호사찰이 설치되는 경우는 왕과 왕비, 세자, 세자빈 등 가장 중요도가 높은 왕실구성원의 태실에 한정되었던 것으로 보인다. 이는 능원묘, 사고(史庫) 등 산간에 위치한 왕실 주요 시설물의 보호 관리를 승려들이 담당하던 조선후기의 변화상과도 맞물려 있다.
