Early Korean studies in Romania began in a very rudimentary and superficial environment. However, in recent decades Korean studies in Romania have developed in many ways due to the active support of the Korean government, the efforts of several university educators and the influence of excellent and diverse cultural contents. The early direction of education, which was limited to language learning, is now expanding to more specific and diverse levels such as history, literature and North Korean studies. Therefore, Korean studies should not only pursue Korean language education but also try continually various approaches to study as a more comprehensive concept.
The study of Korean studies in Romania should be developed in the direction of area studies. If Korean studies is planned, researched and educated within the framework of area studies, which is a complex concept, good results for the continuous growth of Korean studies can be accomplished.
For more effective Korean studies education, the publication of appropriate textbooks for Romanian educational environment is urgently needed. It is considered the ideal way to produce textbooks in accordance with Romania’s reality by teaching educators in Romania. This may be important for the individual educator’s research achievement, but should be regarded as the ultimate goal of the university department of Korean studies.
For the continuous development and expansion of Korean studies in Romania, the establishment of an independent master’s program solely to the department of Korean language and literature is essential. This should serve as a driving force for the qualitative and quantitative growth of Korean studies in Romania.
For the continuous and effective qualitative development of Korean studies, interest and support from various institutions in Korea are necessary for the time being. Of course, it is natural that the efforts and will of Romanian universities should be assumed.
Lastly, in order to improve the quality of Korean studies, hardware changes are important, but first of all, it is more desirable to make software changes and then build suitable hardware accordingly. For this purpose, it may be a good idea for the educators to be the main driver to make new and various changes in the teaching method.
