Popular culture has long been an underdeveloped area in cultural studies that tend to cling to the tradition of the humanities. This is because the aesthetic quality of its texts has been excluded as low class culture through the hierarchical discrimination against high class culture, which relies on the conservative elitist cultural criticism. The primary purpose of this paper is to closely examine the popular cultural implications of musicals as one of the representative forms of popular art. In so doing, I will first explore the historical elements of musicals as popular dramas, and then find the sociocultural meaning of Korean musicals that have already shown a remarkable growth.
The cultural environment that allowed the public performance of musicals in Korean society is, first of all, its economic change as a result of capitalization. Since the 1980's, the middle class has increased in Korean society at an incredible pace due to the material growth and the ensuing economic stability. The existence of the masses with various tastes called to cultural producers for a new change to be sensitive to the consumer's taste. Accordingly, the drama producers and suppliers had to develop and sell cultural commodities that suit the various tastes of the public, and it was when musicals, with their value in exchange and use, entered into the matrix of production, supply and consumption. At this point, as the cultural market was opened up, American musicals were imported and rapidly disseminated among the general public. As a result, a number of consumer groups were formed and they could purchase musicals as cultural commodities. Those musicals had a variety of features that suit the public taste and, therefore, appealed to the young audience.
Another factor in the popularity of musicals can be examined from the side of the performing style. The charm of musicals lies in music and dance, and the life of musical actors is improving their skills. The main reason for the popularity of Korean musicals can be found in the fact that stage actors have grown more rapidly than in any other field and they can deeply move the heart of the audience by increasing their realistic experience. The music flowing with the unfolding of the storyline, the rhythmical and dynamic quality of the dance, and the spectacle setting attract the audience into a lively scene of magical power, tremble, and wild excitement. Musicals as a popular entertainment lead the audience to participate in the show and, taking advantage of this, induce them to break in the festival mood as a group.
As we stepped into the 1990's, Korean musicals rapidly grew. With their various forms and natures put on the stage, the audience response increased, and the audience spectrum growing big, the outlook of Korean musicals may certainly be seen optimistic. However, there are just too many problems piled up to be optimistic about the future of Korean musicals based solely on the given conditions at present.
Above all, the problem is the repertoire with all Broadway hits. The reality is that we are rehashing foreign musicals rather than creating original works. Directly imported Broadway musicals do not fit our communal sentiments and they are just an alternative entertainment relying on the dreams and fantasies of foreigners. If we only follow the Broadway style commercialism, we can easily plunge into a long period of stagnation just like the theatrical world of Japan. Most of all, it is grounded in shortsighted commercialism. That is, the myths of love, ambition, and success, which are the tastes of the young, are wrapped in splendid music and dance just to be made popular. In addition, what worries us even more is the west-centered blindness making eyes at sexually suggestive and violent dramas. Another urgent matter is the absence of theaters for musicals only since blockbuster musicals are being wasted as an one-time event. When these problems are solved, Kore
