Having established the internationalization of industries by way of a continuation of a high rate of economic growth, Korea has increased the opportunity for imployment as an outcome of the expansion in the economic structure. As a result, the problem concerning an increase in man power has become a matter of great interest. The expansion of vocational high schools, under the direction of the government whose aims are to cultivate the level of man power, has been developing only on the surface. But from an internal point of view, that is on the basis of a systemization of practical education and of the development of an efficient training method, this development is at a standstill.
From the stand point of the nation’s aim for the development of human resources, the undertaking of a pedagogical study and a theoretical basis for vocational and technical training is an urgent task. Now in this modern age of information, an examination of typing, an indispensible clerical means, in its educational treatment in girls’ commercial high schools, as a simple skill, leads to the fact that typing lessons are only emphasized as a competitive education in which skill takes precedence. To train technicians as is the demand of the community, an efficient training system, that is a systemized educational course with theoretical foundations, is compulsory.
The purpose of this study is to grasp the present conditions of typing education in its actual state as undertaken at girls’ commercial high schools and to bring in certain suggestions based on the argumentative questions raised here, aiming to normalize the undertaking of typing education.
With this purpose, this study was carried out by means of the investigation of literature and questionnaires. But before drew up the questionnaire, the basic direction of this study had been established through a preliminary research of interviewing some teachers and students at the girls’ commercial high schools. Since then, with an aim to understand the management of English typing curriculum, the questionnaires were distributed to 480 high school seniors in 4 commercial high schools located in Seoul. The result of this questionnaires were treated by using the percentage and total percentage of the four schools.
But it would be mentioned that the study only covered the city of Seoul and that out of all the commercial high schools, only those for the girls were subjected to be undertaken in this study. So this study does not contain nation-wide comprehension. And, as there were no other preceding studies on this subject, it was difficult to undertake a comparative study.
Chapter Ⅱ discussed what vocational and technical education is, and what steps must be taken to realize an effective management.
Chapter Ⅲ dealed with the history of the typewriter from its early stages of conception as a project to the highly modernized typewriters. And by way of a comparative analysis method of the results of the questionnaires and the principles of English typing education, the aims for English typing and the existing reasons for the hindrance in its education in girls’ commercial high school were mentioned.
Chapter Ⅳ gave an overall view of the present condition of English typing education undertaken in girls’ commercial high school. Furthermore the problems concerning its content, method and facilities based on the present state were all mentioned in this section.
The problems mentioned in this thesis concerning the management of English typing curriculum are as follows:
1. Most typewriters used in girls’ commercial high schools in our country, are old and out of date, and these schools provide almost no training for the handling of electric and special typewriters.
2. In English typing education, skill ahs had so much priority that theoretical education of typing has been neglected. Consequently, the state of deficiency of knowledge of foreign languages and of the subjects which are interrelated with typing has emerged.
3. The students are emotionally unstable under the pressure of acquiring the skill for typing and they have no inquisitiveness on the subject. As a result, it is difficult to transform the now existing conditions of typing into a more efficient, creative and flexible subject.
4. None of the teachers of the schools subjected in this study had majored in typing and they appeared to feel a inferiority complex by the fact that they were teaching the subject. Furthermore, the school board of administration and the ministry of education have the tendency to neglect the subject.
5. 60% of all the students attended the typing schools due to the shortage of time allotment for each student in regular school education. The students desire to install a typing hall to practice in.
6. It is difficult for the students to improve and learn the multipurpose technical skills as practice in industrial organization is prohibited except during the vacation.
7. There is an urgent need for a reorganization of the training system based on aptitude, capability and necessity on the parts of the students to satisfy the demand of the community.
Based on these results summarized above, some suggestions as a resolution to normalize the typing education are made as following.
1. Commercial high schools should raise the level of education itself to properly undertake the specialization of the skill.
2. A structure of society, in which capability will be given priority over the grade of technique, must be established.
3. There must be an increase in the time unit for completion to give a complete and efficient instruction within the school curriculum.
4. Positive co-operation from government for investment in equipment of modern fitting is requested.
5. For cultivating the typing teacher of superior able majoring commercial and/or typing education, establishment of suitable law is needed.
