While the materialistic middle class upstarts and corrupt aristocrats are poignantly satirized in Vanity Fair, more Importantly, It dramatizes popular female types widely accepted at that period. the angel of the house and the demoniac woman. The narrator, who confesses that he is a man, seems to faithfully adhere to the Victorian dichotomy of women Amelia Sedley confines herself to the traditional female roles; she is ignorant of and, In fact, uninterested in, matters beyond the boundary of her own family. However, Thackeray does not endow this too good Angel with the wisdom to survive in the harsh world and consequently she is foolish and helpless like an infant Having Amelia betrayed by both her husband and her son, the author tells the reader that the ideal of the Angel of the house is a false idea created to exploit women. The relationship of Amelia and George shows that habitually glorified English home is not so much different from that of a Turkish sultan, and in reality tyrannized by the ruthless patriarch who enslaves female members like harem. Unlike Amelia, Becky is a wicked woman with incredible flexibility to adapt herself to her surroundings. While Thackeray marvels at her wondrous talents and maneuvers, he continually associates her with the tempting snake of the Garden of Eden. However, he also suggests that Becky`s poverty brought about her alienation and inability to love anyone. He refuses to compensate for her deceptions and immoral sexual exploitations; thus her brilliant artistic talents and resourceful cleverness do not help improve her economic condition. Though he brings her to poetic justice, the author does not fail to reveal hypocrisy and prejudices of the upper class, and the defective British inheritance system. Becky represents a powerful matriarch towering over tyrannical patriarchs. She plays the role of Clytemnestra murdering her husband Agamemnon in the Charade and later in relation to the strange death of Jos. She takes revenge on Mr Osborne and George, who cruelly tyrannize over Amelia. Becky is a demon defying patriarchy and Amelia an angel of the house but their roles are often subtly inverted. Tyrannizing over and victimizing Dobbin, Amelia is as cruel and selfish as Becky Likewise, Becky plays the role of an angel to Dobbin, the only man who resists falling a prey to her seduction. By revealing that George married Amelia only at Dobbin`s urge and proposed an elopement to her, Becky awakens Amelia from the illusion that he was a faithful husband and removes obstacles to her marriage to Dobbin. Becky, hiding her snake`s tail underwater, is a monster created by the Victorian patriarchal society which also produced her monstrous twin, the angelic Amelia. They are alter egos to each other in the sense that Becky takes revenge on George on behalf of Amelia, and that Amelia releases her repressed self through Becky. On the surface Amelia and Becky each represent good and evil, however, under the surface, this demarcation is blurred and transgressed. They share each other`s qualities and thereby throw away their monstrosity.
