The mountain god represents one of Korea’s most typical indigenous gods and because the god facilitates various religious wishes, the mountain god is depicted in various forms. The mountain god is considered to be one of the highest heavenly beings and it is, therefore, not only considered important in terms of Korea’s indigenous religion but also in Buddhism. Although one can draw common elements in how the mountain god is depicted in Buddhism and in Korea’s indigenous religion, there are also slight differences in how it is represented. These different representations serve as useful materials for studying how the mountain god is understood in different ways.
In ancient society, as Buddhism embraced indigenous religion, and the two religions were fused together in harmony, paintings of the mountain god enshrined in Buddhist temples were depicted as god clothed with Buddhist-style outer coatings. In Buddhist paintings of the mountain god, they depict the god in the form of Buddhist priests. Buddhist temples, where Buddhist teachings are implemented, ended up enshrining paintings of the mountain god in the form of Buddhist priests. One will also find paintings of the mountain god in Buddhist style, depicting a group of 108 gods or so-called “Shinjung-hyung Sanshindo.” The group of 108 gods is guardians of Buddhism, and the mountain god is depicted as Dongjin Boddhisattva, which is the head of 33 thousand heavens. On the one hand, the treatment of the mountain god, which is a guardian of mountains, as one of the highest gods guarding Buddhism can be understood as the fundamental characteristic of the mountain god.
On the other hand, the mountain god in indigenous religious paintings is depicted as either a “Daegam” type or as “Shinjang” type. The former represents a high official possessing great power and accordingly, the mountain god is also depicted as a possessor of one of the greatest powers. The latter represents a military general who possesses one of the greatest physical powers.
In paintings of the mountain god of both religions, there is a Taoist painting of the mountain god and a feminine type of mountain god. In case of the Taoist painting of the mountain god, which is one of the most common types of paintings, there are three types of paintings according to how tigers are represented. In the “Giho Sanshinhyung” type of painting, the mountain god is mounting a tiger; in the “Samwi Ilchehyung” or “Trinity” type of painting, a tiger is sitting next to the mountain god and his messenger; and in the “Sanshin Shiwihyung” type of painting, a tiger is winding around the mountain god. In all three paintings, the tiger is shown as acting as a guardian, protecting the mountain god. In terms of the style of painting, they show that they have been influenced by Buddhist-style of paintings. In particular, in the case of the "Trinity" of the mountain god, tiger and messenger, they show a unity within the depiction of their individuality.
In the case of feminine-type paintings, a tiger is always present appearing as a messenger as if to complement the weak image of women. These feminine-type paintings appear mainly in indigenous religious paintings but they also appear in Buddhist paintings from time to time. This seems to indicate that a traditional concept of mountain is being reflected in Buddhist and indigenous religious paintings. In case of the female mountain god, she is depicted as a young woman or an older woman (a grandmother). The expressions of the grandmother mountain god are depicted sometimes gravely, sometimes strictly, and sometimes generously as if the generous and self-sacrificial nature of grandmothers is born in the spirit of god. On the other hand, the god in the form of a young woman is seen as representing one of the greatest wishes of women, which is fertility.
The fact that there are various forms of the mountain god means that there are various concepts associated with the god. T
