『太平廣記』「水族」류 水怪 연구 = Analysis of Water Monsters in Taiping Guangji

국문 초록 (Abstract)

『태평광기』는 북송 시대 이방(李昉) 등이 황명을 받아 편찬한 이야기 모음집[類書]으로 모두 6,995편의 이야기를 수록하고 있는 중국 설화문학의 보고이다. 본 연구는 『태평광기』 「수족」류 이야기 속의 ‘수괴’(水怪)를 정의하고 수괴의 특징을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구의 주요 텍스트는 「수족」류 179편의 이야기이다. 우선, 이야기 속에 반영된 공통요소를 찾아 수괴를 정의하고, 이를 토대로 수괴를 추출해 분포 현황을 정리한다. 다음으로 수괴 이야기의 실제 내용에 근거하여 수괴의 특징을 발생원인, 종류와 외형, 능력(변신, 현몽, 유혹) 및 퇴치법 등을 중심으로 분석해서 수괴에 대한 당시의 인식을 고찰하고 중국 고대 수괴의 세계관을 구축하고자 한다. 물[水]과 관련된 주요 콘텐츠인 수괴에 대한 연구는 기존 『태평광기』 연구의 공백을 메우는 의의를 가질 뿐만 아니라, 동아시아 고전이라는 원천콘텐츠를 다양한 문화콘텐츠로 활용하는데 있어 유용한 기초자료를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 아울러 해양문화콘텐츠의 연구 제재를 풍부하게 하여 해양문화학의 구축과 발전에도 일정한 역할을 담당할 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to define ‘water monsters’(水怪) in the 『Taiping Guangji』 and to analyze their characteristics. The primary text of this study is composed of 179 stories found in the 「Water Animals」 series.
Chapter 1 is an introduction.
Chapter 2 examines the definition and distribution of water monsters. To define water monsters, common traits present in these stories were identified. A water monster is a creature that resides or is active in water or places deeply connected with water. Its appearance generally resembles typical aquatic life forms, but with certain modifications. Additionally, these beings possess supernatural abilities. Using these criteria, 137 water monsters were identified across 126 of the 179 stories.
Chapter 3 analyzes the characteristics of water monsters, focusing on the cause of their emergence, their types and appearances, their abilities, and methods of extermination. The primary cause of the emergence of water monsters is typically associated with the concepts of ‘oldness’ and ‘age’, with the passage of time often linked to the creature’s large size. The types of water monsters appeared in the following order: fish[魚], turtles[龜], snapping turtles[鼈], crocodiles[鼉, 鰐], otters[獺], and others. The external appearance of water monsters largely follows the characteristics of the aquatic creatures they resemble but with some distinct modifications. These traits can be grouped into four categories: large and colossal, ancient and aged, attractive and mysterious, and frightening and terrifying. Moreover, water monsters possess supernatural abilities beyond those of ordinary animals or humans, such as the power of transformation, the ability to appear in dreams, and the capacity to seduce. Finally, water monsters are generally perceived negatively and are often targeted for eradication. Depending on the water monster's abilities and the skill of the exterminator, the eradication of these beings can be performed either by competent individuals such as Taoists, monks, or shamans, or by ordinary people.
