부여 화지산 유적의 문헌사적 검토－유적의 성격과 관련한 몇 가지 제안－ = Review of the Mount Hwajisan Ruins in Buyeo with a Perspective of Bibliographic History－Some Suggestions Regarding the Characteristics of the Ruins－

In this paper, I attempted to identify the characteristics of the ruins by combining the excavation results of the Mount Hwajisan ruins with literary records. Through 14 excavations we found the remained structures and relics such as a large scale development of site, 19 building sites with foundation stones, building with buried pillar sites, octagonal wells, icehouse, Chinese white porcelain inkstones and some potteries. However, there remains something which require the full-fledged investigation. Therefore, this paper can be said to be an intermediate summary work at the current stage.
The Mount Hwajisan ruins were constructed as a part of the Sabi Capital maintenance and development project in two stages: from the late 6th century to the early 7th century, and in the early/mid 7th century. I examined the attributes of the Mount Hwajisan ruins from the perspective of public facilities for national level. There might be high possibilities of a detached palace during the Sabi period or a facility for receiving diplomatic envoys. In addition, I proposed that the Mount Hwaji ruins should be examined with reference to the Iksan area, because their construction time were largely same with the development of Iksan area, and the characteric similarities with the Wanggung-ri ruins.
If we synthesize the historical articles on King Mu’s era such as Gungnamji- Pond, Daewang-Po, Manghae-Ru, Manghae-Jeong, we can conclude that Gungnamji is a pond attached to the palace, and Manghae-Ru and Manghae-Jeong are facilities related to the king. Since it is possible to suppose the scene enjoying a banquet with the high-rank officials in a garden facility outside the palace, the Mount Hwajisan ruins can be assumed to be a detached palace.
In addition, there is a possibility that the Mount Hwaji ruins were used as a reception facility for diplomatic envoys, because Baekje valued exchange and diplomacy with foreign countries. During the reigns of King Wideok and King Mu, diplomatic contacts with China became more often, and there were frequent cases of private or detached palaces being used for diplomatic purposes, so it is possible to suppose that those palaces were constructed or planned as detached palaces and converted into residences for foreign diplomats later. It is highly likely that it was the central guesthouse of the capital where diplomatic envoys stayed before meeting the King of Baekje.
Both the hypothesis of detached palaces or guesthouse for the diplomatic have the vulnerability of the deficits of heating, cooking or blocking facilities. If the excavation of the Mount Hwajisan ruins, composed of two stages, is to be progressed more, it can be possible to ascertain the characteristics or the changes of the uses of ruins from the new evidences.
