A Survey on Knowledge, attitude, practice and communication of family planning were conducted by the auther in Gim-Cheon City from July 2 to July 11, 1977. A total of 498 reproductive women were interviewed with the use of a questionnaire. Results of the survey are as follows:
1. General characteristics of the respondees.
1) The average age of the respondees investigated was 33.9 years.
2) The level of middle school and above was 59.6% in the educational level of those interviewed.
3) Middle class showed 85.2% in the economic status of the respondees.
4) The first marriage for 31.4% occurred between the age of 23-24. For the entire respondees, age at marriage averaged 22.6.
2. Knowledge on family planning.
1) Many(54.6%) of those interviewed understood the term "family planning" that it meaned having an ideal number of children to fit their financial situation, 20.7% women answered it meaned to have small number of children, and 18.7% women answered it meaned birth control of dissatisfactory offspring.
2) All of respondees have ever heard about family planning. Many(60.4%) of the interviewees had obtained information on family planning from mass media (radio, T. V. , journals, newspapers and etc.), while 18.5% and 16.3% of them from their aquaintances or friends and medical institutes(health centers and hospitals) respectively. Mass media appeared to play a relatively significant role influencing the respondees to obtain information on family planning.
3) In regard to the desirability of more knowledge on family planning; only 39.2% of those interviewed wanted it positively. It was proved that increased in
educat ional level and decreased in ages.
3. Attitudes towards family planning.
1) Of the 73.3% women who had communication about family planning, 30.3% talked about family planning with friends and neighbors respectively, while 26. 9% of them with their husband.
2) Majority or 87.6% of the total respondees were in favor of family panning.
There was a significant difference in approving the necessity of family planning, based on educational background; those who were in higher education level indicated higher rate of approving family planning. (p<0.01)
3) In regard to the traditional concept about children or offsprings, 46.4% of interviewees replied that sons were "more important than the daughters. " Those who had more education regarded sons were "equal" in importance to daughters. (p<0.01)
4) Many (65.3%) of respondees wanted son in case of first child, while 16.6% and 17.3% wanted daughter, and son or daughter respectively. The ratio wanting daughter as a first child increased in higher educational level. (p<0.01)
5) Average number of living children was 2.8. Many(53.2%) of interviewees replied that in the last pregnancy the child fulfilled their desire. It was proved in rate that second pregnancy was more desirable than first pregnancy.
6) The ideal number of children presented by the respondees averaged 2.8. 40.8% and 37.8% of total wanted 2 and 3 as an ideal number of children respectively. Those women having many living children generally seemed to consider a larger number of children as ideal compared against those having number of children who consider relatively fewer as ideal. (p<0.01)
7) The ideal sex ratio of children was presented by the respondees 1 son and 1 daughter, 2 sons and 1 daughter, 2 sons and 2 daughters in lower rate. It showed that most women wanted more sons. Those who have more education wanted to have a small family. (p<0.01) As for an ideal spacing interval between births, 52.4% wanted 2 years and 40.4% wanted 3 years as an ideal interval. It showed that most women wanted earlier ceasing conceiving function.
4. Practice of family planning techniques.
1) Many (59.3%) of interviewees had experience of practicing contraceptive methods in the past, while 44.0% of those were currently practicing.
2) With 295 women who hade xperience of practicing contraceptive method. It was presented that a woman had used 1.5 kinds of contraceptive method. Oral pills was the one most frequently used (39.8%) and followed by 27.1 % for using coil(loop), 15. 6% for using condom, and 10.0% for undergoing sterility operation.
3) Among women investigated, 32.3% or 161 women had experience of abortions induced, whose average experience of pregnancy was 4.7 times, and whose average rate of abortion induced was 1.7 times. By frequency of abortions induced, those having undergone one abortion rated 62.7%, two abortions 24.8% and some of the women had performed induced abortions a maximum of 10 times. 65.9% of interviewees reported failling in practicing conceptive method or undesirable pregnancy as reasons of abortion induced.
