Peter Shaffer is a celebrated British playwright who is concerned with themes of religion and existence. So Shaffer finds conflicts of main character in several causes because the major subject is the conflict between protagonist and antagonist in his four plays, The Royal Hunt of Sun, Equus, Amadeus, and Yonadab.
Especially, in Equus, Shaffer tries to deal with themes based on fundamental and metaphysical problems. For example, the existence of God, human's loss of self, alienation, and religion in civilized society. Equus concerns Alan's comeback of 'Normal' society and self-knowledge, but this play is about Dysart, the psychiatrist, because he learns that Alan's passion of worship, through that of Alan's, Dysart begins to understanding his life.
In Equus, Dysart is a tragic character of representation in modern society. In chapter Ⅱ, through Dysart's personal and professional life, and Alan's passion, we can find causes of his conflict. He has tragic flaw 'the lowest sperm', barren life, and professional menopause and so on. In spite of Dysart wants one person in his life he could show everything. Thus, he is trying to pursue him identity in this chapter.
Dysart's name implies, his old manners, 'dies hard'. But Dysart envies Alan's passion and Dysart comes to understand his personal, professional, and social situation and real freedom at same time in his life in chapter Ⅲ. So he begins to form new relationship with Alan and search for his identity. His awareness provides himself with the first step in finding his identity.
In the end, through fundamentally in harmony and identity between Dysart and Alan. Shaffer shows us his most complete attempt to unite an existential and religious search for personal identity as a way of solving the modern social problems in Equus.
