This study is a longitudinal study on a rural village over a period of approximately 30 years tracing the changes in the adaptive strategies within the family. The life-course perspective which deals with the family as a social unit in relation with time and history in a contextual, process-oriented and dynamic way is adopted here. Special attention is paid to life-courses of a cohort of farming successors born in 1950s who have experienced most intensely the rapid socio-economic changes of Korean society and are the last farming successors in the village. The results are as follows. During 1970s and 80s the succession of bumper years combined with the double grain price system and government rice procurement program all at once turned the poor 'S' Village into a place of great hopes. For the first time, agriculture had become a profitable business and many farming households began to set up a family strategy of continuing the family business by making sure that at least one son becomes a farming successor. The patrilineal family ideology prioritizing the eldest son was strong, thus the first son being educated in urban areas and the second son becoming a farming successor, managing the farm and taking care of the parents. Sacrifices of daughters were taken for granted. The 90s are characterized by the strategy of educating all children by renouncing agricultural succession and expanding the second occupation. The shut down of the double grain price system and government rice procurement program and the agricultural trade liberalization caused a great economic strain along with debts of farm machines. Embarkment on investment in the education of their children has become the primary family strategy and was the main impetus behind taking up a second occupation. But the differences in education between sons and daughters were still the norm. 2000s has seen the weakening of the patrilineal family ideology and the strategy of "the family farming". The family strategy of educating all the children has become common. Whether a son or a daughter, whoever shows a propensity for studying is entitled to college education. The declining birth rate, improvement of income, and the popularization of college education are related to the strategy. No differences between families with different income levels in educating the children are seen. Today "durea"(the farmers' cooperative groups), p'umassi(labor exchange) and wage labor have disappeared and women's farming labor has decreased in the village. Instead, farming labor is provided by grownup children living in the city, which is brought by the mechanization of agriculture and the improved transportation system.
