A Correlation Study of English Vocabularies, Grammar and Topic Familiarities with Listening Comprehension on Various Levels of Students
The purpose of this study is to identify the correlation of vocabulary, grammar and topic familiarities with high school students' English listening comprehension, depending on various levels of the students. Also, listening comprehension consists of the difficulty of the test and the percentage of correct answers of both bottom-up and top-down questions.
The test and survey were conducted with 102 high school students. The survey consisted of questions regarding students' preference of English subject, private education and English listening study etc. Then, students took three tests. First, English listening test with 18 questions was carried out. The questions were finding details and finding topic from 2016 mock test of Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation. The questions were divided into high, middle and low level of difficulty according to the standardized criterion from KICE. After taking a listening test, students were asked to check the familiarity of each listening contents. Second, vocabulary test was conducted with 10 questions from listening script and 10 from vocabulary list (Neungyule, 2013). Students were asked to write the meaning of the words after listening to the words. Lastly, grammar test was done with 34 questions from 17 English grammar structure (Ellis, 2005). Listening each sentence, students checked whether the sentence was grammatically correct or not.
The first research question is to identify the correlation of vocabulary, grammar and topic familiarity with listening comprehension depending on various levels of students. As a result, when the students’ level is high there is not any correlation with them, when the students’ level is middle there is correlation with vocabulary and when the students’ level is low there is correlation with vocabulary and topic familiarity. It means that high level of students have correlation with other factors affecting listening comprehension except for vocabulary, grammar and topic familiarity. Also, middle and low level of students have correlation with vocabulary in common but don’t have any correlation with grammar.
The second research question is to identify the correlation with the difficulty of questions, vocabulary, grammar and topic familiarity depending on various levels of students. As a result, when students’ level is high, with high, middle and low level of difficulty of questions, there is not any correlation with vocabulary, grammar and topic familiarity. But, when students’ level is middle, with high and low level of difficulty of questions, there is correlation with vocabulary in common. When students' level is low, with high, middle and low level of difficulty of questions, there is correlation with vocabulary and topic familiarity in common.
The last research question is to identify the correlation of vocabulary, grammar and topic familiarity with the percentage of correct answers in both bottom-up and top-down questions. The result is that when students’ level is high, any of them don't affect the bottom-up questions, but vocabulary affects the percentage of correct answers in top-down questions. When students’ level is middle, vocabulary highly affects the percentage of correct answers in bottom-up questions and there is no correlation with any of them with the percentage of correct top-down answers. Lastly, when students’ level is low, vocabulary and topic familiarity affects the percentage of correct answers in both top-down and bottom-up questions.
Overall, when students’ level is high, vocabulary, grammar and topic familiarity don’t affect the listening comprehension regardless of level of difficulty and types of questions. When students’ level is middle and low, vocabulary is the important factor to listening comprehension, and topic familiarity is important factor when students' level is low.
Depending on various levels of students, vocabulary, grammar and topic familiarity affects listening comprehension differently. Therefore, English listening education considering various levels of students is necessary.
