AbstractPope's poems aim at christian humanity and socialistic vision based on the real
life in the world. He does think much of friendship, generosity, and bitter situations
of the world. He was a hunchback, shy, and a man of physical lack. But he had an
activeattitude to mortal life striving for a truth which he had searched during his
life-time. He always felt that his ideas were distorted by dunciads around him. Pope
places himself on the altar of truth, overcoming absurd circumstances around him.To reach at this level Pope uses a Horatian satires and epistle. Because of this
morality often becomes militant in his poems. So is "An Epistle to Dr. Arbuthnot".
Pope believed that there were only a few irrefutable truths in human nature. There
are not many certain truths in this world, and the duty of the poet is to express
those truths in a fresh, contemporary light. To reveal this view, he uses the
abstractions of Nature, Wit, and Judgment. For him these abstractions are active,
ambitious, and adventurous as well as longing to go forward and wishing to be
higher. So Pope has converted his living enemy and his distorted situations into the
archetype of hardship to overcome. At this level Pope who has the brilliance of the
poetic creation refutes the darkness which he is drawing. Say, universal darkness
cannot bury all things when such intellectual splendor of poetry survives.He transforms this darkness of the world into a humanistic lightness which can
be called an universal truth within all men. But Pope himself tries to remainas just
a man not a prophet or educator. From this point of view we can feel humanistic
element. We are, of course, certain that Pope's humanistic victory is based on the
real life as it seen in his best poems "An Essay on Man", "An Essay on Criticism"
and mock-heroic poems as well.
