‘귀축(歸竺)’과 ‘귀향(歸鄕)’의 두 갈래 길 - 한국철학사 기술의 몇 가지 원칙 - = The two paths of ‘Gwi-chug(歸竺)’ and ‘Gui-hyang(歸鄕)’-Some principles of describing the history of Korean philosophy-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이글은 한국철학사 기술의 몇 가지 원칙을 제안하고 그 필요성을 드러내는 데 목적이 있다. 필자는 한국철학사 집필 이전에 다음과 같은 세 가지 원칙을 세웠다.
첫째, 전공자들만 이해할 수 있는 난해한 용어를 피하고 대중이 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 언어로 기술한다.
둘째, 철학자의 삶을 비중 있게 소개함으로써 대중이 쉽게 접근할 수 있도록 유도하고 과거의 철학이 당대의 현실적 문제를 어떻게 돌파하려 했는지 밝힌다.
셋째, 한국철학의 정체성이나 고유성을 밝히는 데 비중을 두기보다 동아시아 지성사의 맥락을 충실하게 드러내는 방향으로 기술한다.
이상의 세 가지 기준에 따라 집필한 결과 기존 한국철학사가 개념이나 범주, 방법론을 중심으로 기술한 것과 달리 시대별 철학자의 삶과 당대의 현실적 문제를 중심으로 내용이 채워졌고, 과거의 철학과 현재의 문제를 연결할 수 있는 응용 사례를 덧붙이는 방식으로 구성하게 되었다. 모두 대중과의 소통 가능성을 높이고자 하는 의도로 세운 기준이다.
통합과 화해의 기원이라 할 불교 철학에서부터 민주주의와 평화의 가치를 추구하며 치열하게 살다 간 함석헌과 장일순 등으로 대표되는 현대 한국의 재야 철학에 이르기까지, 한국철학의 역사에는 한국인의 삶의 문법을 이해할 수 있는 다양한 사유로 가득 차 있다. 이들의 철학은 진리에 대한 추구와 민중의 삶을 분리하지 않았기 때문에 당대 민중의 삶 깊숙이 뿌리내릴 수 있었다. 따라서 앞으로의 한국철학사 또한 현대 한국의 대중과 보다 적극적으로 소통할 수 있는 방향으로 기술해야 할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this article is to suggest some principles of describing the history of Korean philosophy and reveal their necessity. Before writing the history of Korean philosophy, I established the following three principles: First, the writing should avoid difficult terms that only majors can understand and be described in language that the public can easily understand.
Second, by introducing the philosopher's life heavily, the writing should be easily accessible to the public and reveal how past philosophy attempted to overcome the realistic problems of the time.
Third, the writing should aim to faithfully reveal the context of East Asian intellectual history together rather than to focus solely on revealing the identity or uniqueness of Korean philosophy.
As a result of writing in accordance with the three principles above, unlike the existing history of Korean philosophy that focused on concepts, categories, and methodologies, the content of my work was filled with a focus on the lives of philosophers and the realistic problems of the time by era, and was made up by adding the application examples that can connect the past philosophy and the current problems. As a result, all of the above principles reflect the intention to increase the possibility of communication with the public.
From Buddhist philosophy, the origin of integration and reconciliation, to modern Korean philosophy represented by Ham Seok-heon and Jang Il-soon, who lived fiercely in pursuit of the values of democracy and peace, the history of Korean philosophy is full of various thoughts that help us to understand the grammar of Korean life.
Because their philosophy did not separate the pursuit of truth and the lives of the people, it was able to take deep root in the lives of the people of the time. Therefore, in the future, the history of Korean philosophy should also be described in a way that can communicate more actively with the public of modern Korea.
