During the Japanese colonial period especially 1920s and 1930s, a number of poets had written travel poems. Lim Hak-Soo (Lim) is one of the most famous poet in writing travel poems. According to the academic world, he is generally considered as a pro-Japanese literary man. However, many of his poems actually reveals the value of patriotism and the national pride. First of all, Lim's collections of travel poems, A Collection of Poems Concerning All Korean Landscapes (『八道風物詩集』, 1938) and A Collection of Poems Concerning Battle Lines (『戰線詩集』, 1939) show his affection towards the Joseon dynasty and its landscapes. By only seeing the fact that most of his lines from A Collection of Poems Concerning All Korean Landscapes are symbolizing the properity of the Joseon dynasty and the beauty of Korean cultural heritages, his awareness towards the country can be estimated. Moreover, the contents from A Collection of Poems Concerning Battle Lines also focus on the objective description of the battlefield rather than praise towards the Japanese militarism.
In addition, according to the acquaintances of Lim, the reason why he did not major law was that he did not want to cringe to the Japanese. Although Lim had done a consolatory round tour due to the enforcement of Japan, he always had unfavorable opinions about what the Japanese had done. Even for the book review of his mentor Sato Giyoshi(佐藤淸), Lim continued to emphasize the conscience of the poet. By considering various facts which show his affection towards the mother country, it is narrow-minded to denounce Lim as a pro-Japanese literary man. He was at least not so close to Japan to be denounced. Also, his various romantic works should be considered in evaluation.
In conclusion, the evaluation of Lim as a poet should not be done by his relationship with Japan but in various ways. His pursuit of romanticism, affection towards the landscapes of the mother country and inner consciousness which appear in his lines should be considered. In other words, Lim will gain the proper status in the modem history of the Korean poetry if an overall evaluation is accomplished.
