(1) The Backgrounds of Magie
By the end of the 16th century, the innate life of man came to be conceived because of the Renaissance and the Reformation. Besides, the advancement of science gave infinite impetus to human intellect, which in turn manifested the impulse to reach the mysteries of the universe and the very source of the creation by God. The age, which was naive in intelligence, came to have magier, magician, and Doctor Faust is one of the magicians.
(2) The Legend of Faust and Goethe
Goethe leas attracted to the gigantic character of Faust, and through it he attempted to create the representative character by employing Faust as chosen out of all humanity. The idea is that a man who strives to make infinite efforts and improve himself will never be ruined and will be eventually saved.
(3) Lessing's Faust and Goethe's Faust
The discovery was alreday made by Lessing that Faust should be saved. Yet, the stage Lessing was capable to reach was mere quantitative increase in intellect, whereas the starting point of Goethe's Faust is the moment when he rushes out of the world of intellect into that of behavior. In other words, the former, was the world of intellect; the latter was the world of experiement.
II. The idea of salvation as appeares in Prolog im Himmel
Attempts were made to analyze the idea of salvation. I find the conclusion that a real man blindly worship God, let God will finally save the man who makes continuous efforts toward Him. Mephisto is created as a stimulus to a man who is apt to neglect God out of his desire for comfort.
III. The Tragedy of Gretchen
The researcher made a study of social material and Goethe's material out of his own experience, and tried to compare the tragedy of Gretchen and that of the heroin. Further studies were made by analysing each scene in order to determine the essence of love, faith appearing both in Faust and Gretchen.
