The greatness of the creation of God, according to John Milton, does not consist in only destroying evil, but in creating more good from exploiting the evil He does, and also in creating continuously of what is pleasing to Him, which we can find out from the songs the angels sing on the Sabbath day on which they have no work, being at rest, as well as from the Bilbe, saying, "My Father worketh even until now, and I work."
Milton believes that he can create only by God, by receiving creativity from Him, and also believes that "the source of all his creativity" is the freedom of conscience given from above. We can hear it from his own voice, "Give me the liberty to know, to utter, and to argue freely according to conscience, above all liberties." He feels confident of it, makes an assertion of it, and still acts for it.
In the garden of Eden Adam and Eve "created in his Image" by God are an exquisite expression of creation out of His free will for "his new delight", and for whom this world is created. In other words they are the flower of God's creation, but this is possible just through their willing and complete submission to God the Creator as Eve's to Adam.
One of the most important matters on which Milton lays great emphasis is working or labor itself. And his imagination pictures Adam and Eve doing "thir sweet Gard'ning labor", which gives them "cool Zephyr" and "wholesome thirst and appetite" as a reward for it.
As for Milton, "he would have been happier to see Adam and Eve really working in that garden." To create is his great, delightful labor that he believes is "real and sincere devotion to God and man." And the very belief and the constant efforts with it are the cause of Paradise Lost to be produced, which was meant for a lantern of the mind in a dark age.
Milton compares his creation of Paradise Lost to God's creation of the earth, and he prays for God's help religiously, "And chiefly Thou O Spirit, that dost prefer/Before all Temples th' upright heart and pure,/Instruct me", for he well understands that he is a mere servant or instrument of God himself creates, and that only God is the Lord of creation, and that Milton himself is His good and faithful hand to be who can create through God, as far as he belongs to Him, as is his firm belief always.
