With the development of modern technology, the importance of smart devices is steadily increasing. The development of smart devices has been led by technologies such as semiconductors and batteries based on metals such as Cu, Pd, and Pt. With the development of devices that are gradually refined and advanced, theoretical understanding of metal reduction is required. In particular, the metal reduction method using wet chemicals is suitable for microstructure, and the amount of use is rapidly increasing. Representative wet chemical reduction methods include homogeneous particle synthesis, electroless deposition and electrodeposition.
The nucleation and growth of the metal ion in the homogeneous phase was performed through Cu microparticles using a gravimetric method. The Cu microparticles were synthesized in aqueous solution containing cupric ion and HCHO under various conditions (temperature, additive) and the total mass was monitored during the synthesis. The relation between the total mass and time was formularized using heterogeneous and pseudo-first order reaction kinetics of the autocatalytic surface growth of copper with a modification of the Finke-Watzky kinetic model. Fitting of theoretical curves to the experimental results with various temperatures provided the rate constants of the surface growth, and the reaction activation energy was found from the Arrhenius plot as 105.4 kJ/mol. The obtained value was validated by comparing it with one from copper film growth. Its change was observed with the addition of 2,2’-dipyridyl during synthesis. When 2,2'-dipyridyl was added, the reaction was inhibited, and the degree of activation energy was measured to increase by about 8.5 kJ/mol.
And the derived and verified equation was applied to nucleation region. When 2,2'-dipyridyl, a stabilizer, was added, the activation energy was measured to be low. From these results, it could be seen that the stabilizing effect of 2,2'-dipyridyl is through growth inhibition, not nucleation..
Growth of the metal in the heterogeneous phase was performed using copper electroless deposition (Cu ELD). A mathematical model for the Cu ELD on a planar substrate is derived and find out the relation equation was also obtained. The factors of kinetics of Cu ELD was determined, and each parameters were evaluated by linear fitting methods. Rate-determining step of the formaldehyde-based Cu ELD is the electron-loss step of methylene glycol so that the concentration of methylene glycol is the key factor of derivation of rate equation. Finally, the relationship of the Cu ELD rate composed of each kinetic factor was presented.
Lastly, electrodeposition was aimed at preparing a catalyst, and Pt and Pd as a catalyst were plated on a flat substrate using a self-terminating electrodeposition (SED) method. Firstly, the catalyst prepared through Pt SED was applied to methanol oxidation, and the one prepared through Pd SED was intended to be applied to N2O reduction.
The development of high-performance electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation is an urgent task to enhance the efficiency of direct methanol fuel cells. We report a simple and controllable method to fabricate Pt-decorated TiN electrocatalysts using self-terminated electrodeposition at room temperature and ambient pressure. Under optimized deposition parameters such as electrolyte pH, TiN substrate pretreatment, and pulsed deposition potential, quenching of the Pt electrodeposition facilitates obtaining an extremely low Pt mass loading (0.93 μg·cm-2) on the TiN substrate. Repeated deposition potential pulses enable a gradual increase in Pt loading, with a precise control of the loaded Pt mass. Maximum intrinsic and mass activities for the methanol oxidation reaction are achieved for the catalyst with a Pt loading mass of 55.0 μg/cm2, prepared by 20 deposition pulses. The maximum intrinsic activity achieved with the Pt-decorated TiN electrocatalyst is five times higher than that obtained with bulk Pt. The present results thus provide a facile method for the fabrication of cost-effective electrocatalysts.
Core-shell catalysts have a great potential to achieve noble catalytic activity for redox reactions due to strain and ligand effects originating from the different physical and chemical properties of the core and shell elements. In this study, we rationally design highly stable and active X@Pd (X = Ag, Au, Ir, Cu, Pt, Rh, Pd, and Ni) catalysts for N2O reduction that surpass the activity of commercially available Pd catalysts. Using first-principles calculations, the Au@Pd catalyst was finally selected based on its catalytic activity and the electronic structure of the Pd catalyst under applied strain. Then, the catalytic activity was optimized by varying the shell thickness of Aun/Pd using electrochemical layer-by-layer deposition. Lastly, the excellent activity of Au@Pd nanoparticles was demonstrated for electrochemical reduction of N2O; the activity of Au@Pd nanoparticles is enhanced with Au@Pd #2 with a Tafel slope of 0.145 V/dec, compared to commercial Pd/C catalyst with that of 0.208 V/dec. In terms of long term stability, after 1000 cycles, the activity of the Au@Pd catalyst (14% decrease) showed a small decrease compared to the commercial catalyst (66% decrease ).
