This paper aims to examine the Confucius icons孔子圖像 enshrined at facilities for ritual and cult among the Confucius images produced at or introduced to the Joseon Dynasty.
A primary objective of production or inflow of the Confucius images was to enshrine them at ritual facilities and perform a ceremony. Regardless of an issue of the Confucian religiosity, they were used as an object or a tool for rituals at a Confucius shrine文廟 or Youngdang影堂, carrying out certain religious function, and respected as an icon聖像 or destructed as an idol偶像 according to a particular age and region, idea and pursuit of interest of a group. Hence, this paper analyzes the Confucius images produced at or introduced to the Joseon Dynasty for ritual and cult and examines how they formed part of the visual culture of the Joseon period in religious and social aspects. Firstly, it examined a change of recognition on the Confucius images to an icon or an idol along with transition of the history of idea and culture and the Confucius cult culture chronologically through images. Also, it conducted a multi-angle analysis on main Confucius Youngdang established in the Joseon Dynasty and Confucius images enshrined there according to those days' historic situation and character of an enshrined place in religious and social perspective.
At ritual spaces from the 8th century to the end of the Goryeo Dynasty, Confucius image was respected as an icon but from the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty it came to disappear gradually at a ritual space. Since, in the Joseon Dynasty advocative of the Confucian ideology, enshrinement of images at a ritual place was regarded as heretical evil customs and Confucius image was assumed as an idol because of the Confucian ritual perspective that the tablet神主 should be used. Besides, along with the enforcement of the reforms of sacrificial rites during emperor Jiajing's reign in the Ming嘉靖改制 having a Royal edict of the Confucius image destruction in the Confucius shrine in 1530, and in 1574 of the Joseon Dynasty, it was finally demolished at Gaesung Confucius shrine and disappeared in every Confucius shrine.
This paper paid attention to a point that Seowon書院 was established for enshrining the Confucius images even in a historical flow tabooing them. With the development of the 16th century's campaign for founding Seowon, Gusan Seowon丘山書院 was erected to reverence the Confucius at Gangneung in 1555. There was no regional former Confucians to worship at Gangneung so it failed in satisfying requisites for establishing Seowon. Hence Seowon for the Confucius was formed in the name of the Confucius images from China. However, it conflicted with a Confucian ritual view to taboo an ancestral rite for an image and there was a problem overlapping the Confucius shrine of Hyanggyo with a rite for the Confucius so foundation of Seowon was faced with a serious situation. Therefore, to solve such a problem, it seems that persons in charge of establishment of Seowon changed a ceremony for an image from Seok-chae釋采 to offering incense焚香, ensuring the legitimacy for enshrining the Confucius images.
Cult of the Confucius through images was expanded to many regions along with enshrinement of the Confucius images at Gusan Seowon. In particular, this study analyzes a point that case of Gusan Seowon was actively modeled and the Confucius images were used as a tool for establishing Seowon at Gwanbuk having a similar humanistic environment to that of Gangneung and also the Confucius images enshrined were made a legend as a representation of the 'home of academies' through texts on a painting <Xintantu杏壇圖> by Na Neungho羅能浩. Besides, it shows that such <Xintantu> visualized Confucian pleasure of enjoying arts and loving study iconographically, and its theme and symbol are fitting for the aim of a studying place Seowon, showing an appropriate relation for its aim with the enshrined painting.
Sosu Seowon紹修書院 has <Dacheng zhisheng wenxuanwangdian zuotu大成至聖文宣王殿座圖> that reinterpreted and expressed visually Confucius shrine and represented the confucius as an image of an emperor, and this paper gives special attention to a point that its history was embellished to show symbolism and authority of Sosu Seowon. This painting had been said to be brought by An Hyang安珦 along with the doctrines of Chu-tzu from the Yuan and worshiped as a kind of historic monument recalling a fact that he transmitted the neo-Confucianism of Chu tzu to the Eastern. However, formal analysis on this painting shows that it has no relation to An Hyang. Since, Sosu Seowon was a very symbolic space in that it was the first nationally authorized Seowon in the Joseon Dynasty that enshrined An Hyang spreading the doctrine of Chu tzu firstly, it seems <Dacheng zhisheng wenxuanwangdian zuotu> was embroidered as a visual mark symbolizing the beginning and development of Joseon Confucianism with connection to An Hyang.
Noseong Gweulrisa魯城闕里祠 and Hwaseong Gweulrisa華城闕里祠, most representative Youngdang that enshrined the Confucius images, have a deep connection to King Jeongjo正祖. Hence, it examined Confucius images enshrined at two Gweulrisa, and about recognition on and use of those days' Confucius images through a 'view' of King Jeongjo. Most Confucius images enshrined at Noseong Gweulrisa were moved out of other regions under the order of King Jeongjo. In those days, Youngdang was over- excessively erected everywhere by reason of the Confucius images and many saints', and King Jeongjo regarded it was unreasonable to build a shrine without permission of the Court so moved Confucius images to Noseong Gweulrisa. Besides, it seems that negative perspective of King Jeongjo that Confucius images could not express those of His real functioned as a main drive for their transfer. However, despite such negative perception on the Confucius images, King Jeongjo built Gweulrisa at Hwaseong and enshrined the Confucius portrait that existed at a court library內閣, making Confucius descendants perform a rite. The reason why is that King Jeongjo set as a task building Hwaseong to establish his political position so intended to give it an image of a sanctum through building Gweulrisa and making Hwaseong as a center of the Confucian culture. In other words, it may be regarded that King jeongjo's recognition on and use of the Confucius images varied as a political situation and objective. At present, a number of the Confucius images exist at Noseong Gweulrisa so it is possible to guess about those popularized in the 18th century but there seem to be no painting enshrined at the time of foundation at Hwaseong Gweulrisa. Related records show that Confucius images in Dongguk Gweulriji東國闕里誌 are those transferred from enshrined images at the time of establishment. However, it is assumed that these paintings were borrowed from Confucius images included in Shengjitu聖蹟圖, having no relation to the Confucius images enshrined at that time.
In the end of the Joseon Dynasty, the Confucius images were used as a symbolic representation of the confucian thought of righteousness and Respecting China & Defeating savage owing to plunder by Japan, invasion by the Western Powers and spread of Catholic regarded as heresy. Jeongeup Yeongyangsa瀛陽祠 is the Confucius Youngdang built from such a periodic atmosphere and it is told that Confucius images enshrined here were produced by Chae Yongsin蔡龍臣 who painted many portraits of heads of righteous armies and patriots against japan. Prior paintings centered mainly on copy of art books or Chinese Confucius images but this painting reflects a unique style of Chae Yongsin without influence by the existing images. Escaping from a traditional expression of a person, Chae Yongsin expressed the Confucius with a front view he used frequently, adding the western shading. Besides, there was no exemplar so expressive method for face embodied by Chae Yongsin himself for a long time was reflected actively and face of the Confucius changed to that of Joseon.
Sasansa泗山祠 also copied and enshrined the Confucius image of Yeongyangsa to reverence the Confucius as a representation of Respecting China & Defeating savage. Furthermore, it brought the Confucius images by moving or copying from other Youngdang as many as 4 times. It copied an image corresponding to that of Dongguk Gweulriji and regarded as the original of Qufu, China in addition to the Confucius image enshrined at Noseong Gweulrisa. Besides, along with an exemplar of a photo of the Confucius statue enshrined at the main hall大成殿 of the Qufu confucius temple孔廟, a portrait of the deceased was to be produced by Chae Yongsin. Maybe it aimed to raise the authority of Youngdang and ensure its foundation for preservation by enshrining the authoritative image. Authenticity of the Confucius images was a bone of contention all the time and it was an issue that connected directly to preservation of Youngdang. Hence, an image acknowledged as the true image眞像 of Confucius or enshrined at the authoritative Youngdang like Gweulrisa in those days was enshrined so it could rip an authenticity problem in the bud and at the same time represent legitimacy of Youngdang to be existed. In other words, copying of the Confucius images occurred at Sasansa may be regarded as 'duplication of authority' and a political action for preservation of Youngdang.
