As a humanistic artist, Nathaniel Hawthorne was greatly concerned about "The Unpardonable Sin" of a man. In a note written in 1844, he defined it as "a want of love and reverence for the Human Soul, " and he always feared if he might commit such a sin in his need to be an aloof observer of others in pursuit of artistic beauty. Thus, many of his works are on those artist-figures whose cold observation of others causes their or others' downfall. This theme of "The Unpardonable Sin" is also extended to his works on non-artist figures such as religious perfectionists, cold intellectuals, and mad scientists, and he presents various cases of the unpardonable sin in these characters.
Richard Digby of "The Man of Adamant" and the protagonist of "Young Goodman Brown" are both religious perfectionists who destroy themselves as they cannot accept the dark side of human nature found in others' bosom. Rev. Hooper in "Minister's Black Veil" and the main figure in "Ethan Brand" similarly recognize the same kind of sin in man, but they suffer from the discovery of the fatal sin found not in others but in their own selves. However, these two characters are different in their responses to the sin of the same nature 'while the former endures his isolation in his community resulting from his public recognition of the sin in him and the townspeople's reluctance to see the same sin in thens the latter commits suicide as he cannot bear the shock of finding that sin in him after a long journey of seaching for it.
Hawthorne's concern in this theme is also revealed in his works on intellectual scientists. While the doctor in "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment " does not lose his balance between intellectual pursuit and human warmth in his experiment and observation, Aylmer of "The Birthmark" and the doctors in "Rappaccini's Daughter" are mad scientists whose cold and inhuman pursuit for the absolute yields innocent victims. Though Dr. Heidegger Is a man of science who should be an aloof observer of scientific facts, he tries to retain his moral integrity and even draws a moral lesson from hls experiment. But Aylmer is a mad dreamer whose pursuit for beauty triggers the death of his wife as his experiment goes against natural laws. Similarly, Rappaccini victimizes his daughter Beatrice as he isolates her from human contact by reckless pursuit for scientific achievements and causes Baglioni, his rival, to offer her fatal antidote presumably out of jealousy.
Whether Hawthorne writes on religuous perfectionists or mad scientists, he is engrossed with the themes found in his works about artists : the quest for the ideal and its accompanying need for isolation, "the unpardonable sin" of violating human heart, and the need to balance the real and the ideal or the intellect and the heart. The problems of these non-artist figures were also those of Hawthorne the artist whose pursuit for ideal vision was in conflict with his need to contact with his community and who was afraid If he would be separated from human warmth for good.
