The Polonaise and the Mazurka are the dance music of Poland. The origin of the Polonaise is not known, but began to develope in Poland after 17C.
The folk style Polonaise developed by the peasant class of Poland is vocal and ceremonial, but to be opposed it, the courtly Polonaise is instrumental and sophisticate. The artistical growth of it, howeverm have resulted from the courtly Polonaise.
It's characterized with moderate triple meter, consisting of phrases with feminine ending, and consisting a short repeated fhythmic motif.
About 1800, it acguired its classic form, which, in addition to the feature named above, is characterized by the specific rhythmic pattern ??????.
This dance music ws swublimed into the artistical works for the concert and then introduced in the whole Europe by F.chopin in 19 C.
He tried to express the unfortunate environment of Poland, and the nostalgia of the ancient Polish heroes, and expressed the Polish emotion with his characteristic individuality in muu\sical contents.
The Polonaise-Fantasy (op.61) among his last works ws particulary a new style form and is one with his most excellent works.
According to these dance musics, F.Chopin is recognized the earlist composer with the nationalism led by the romantic musicians in 19C.
In this century, being a portion of the romanticism, the tendency of the nationalism had been spread in the whole Europe.
But he is rather a great romantic composer who expressed his poetic image, subtle emotion and the patriotic spirit for this native country with his colorful tone, his particular pedaling, chromatic harmony, dramatic dynamics and musical signatures than who was a revolutarian of the viewpoint of the simple nationalism.
