화훼장식프로그램을 이용한 원예치료와 일반노인의 삶의 질 향상 = Horticultural Therapy Based on Floral Design program and Elevation on Life Quality of the Elderly

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate whether the horticultural therapy based on floral design program have any effect on advancing the life quality and happiness of the elder; For this purpose the therapies were conducted for the elder persons over 60 years, who lives in Namyangju city, Kyunggido province. These therapies continued for three months from 4th Sept., to 27th Nov., 2007, and every Tuesday during the experiment total 12 therapies were offered for two hours from 10:30~12:30 A.M. at the Center for the elder. In order to compare two different groups were organized: one was therapy participant group with 40 elder persons and the other non-participant group with same numbers.
The tools for the evaluation were as follows; geriatric depression scale short form korea version, GDSSF-K), self-esteem scales, life satisfaction scales of elderly. With these tools evaluations were conducted three times : before the programme, after 6 therapies, and after all the therapies. The data of the evaluations were analysed in t-test with SPSS 12.0 programme.
When we saw the before-evaluation results the two elderly groups before the horticultural therapy were proved to be similar.
The independent t-test evaluation results, which shows the differences between the two groups, indicate that although the non-participant group did not show any difference in the evaluations the participant group shows positive and significant changes.
As we saw the results of the corresponding t-test which finds the differences of dependent variables in the same group the participant group has shown meaningful differences p<0.001 in the respects of depression, self-esteem, and life satisfaction, contrary to the non-participant group p<0.05. In addition, it was observed that as the therapies has been conducted the members has become more applicable.
After the horticultural therapies the elderly persons were inclined to favor on colorful and bright ornaments with cut flowers, and they also prefers ornaments with pot flowers which have roots and lives comparably long. And what was most difficult is said the cut flower topiary(42.5%) which needs accurate skills and subtle moves of fingers and hands. In respect of psychological changes, the participants said that they feel better and their relationships with families becomes good.
According to the results, the horticultural therapy based on floral design programme had good effects on the life quality and happiness of the elder.
As our society became the so-called ultra-aging society with prolonged average life expectancy the problem of the elder is one of the crucial social problems which we cannot neglect. Under such circumstances, it is necessary to support the elder with social welfare policies and financial aids. In addition, the more horticultural therapy programmes should be also given to the elder for their good life quality and happiness. Therefore the support of the Korean Educational Development Institute which has made the study possible is a significant support as a part of the elderly welfare, because it will contribute to the happiness of the elder through the horticulture therapy, a kind of life-long educational programmes.
