대마도의 지역정체성의 재구축 -조선통신사와 위인을 둘러싼 스토리텔링을 중심으로-(1) = Reconstructing Regional Identity of Tsushima - Focusing on Storytelling of Joseon Tongsinsa and Great Persons

This article examines the responses of Tsushima, located in Nagasaki prefecture and on the border between Korea and Japan, using historical `stories` lately frequently mentioned, the attempts to reconstruct regional identity and its evaluation, meanings and future challenges. Tsushima has a strong historical link with Korean Peninsula, and has played a huge role to revive the region under the slogan of “Island of the Border” and “Island for Exchange between Korea and Japan”, considering its history of exchange between Korea and Japan as its identity. Meanwhile, a campaign has constantly been conducted to introduce “So Yoshitoshi” and “Amenomori Hoshu” and, in 2016, an application was filed with UNESCO to register Joseon Tongsinsa on the World Cultural Heritage. Such a campaign is one of the ways to introduce the regional history both inside and outside Tsushima by way of storytelling. This article examines by whom and with what contents stories concerning great people who had connection with Tsushima can be told, Also, it discusses matters to use `storytelling` and its prospects with regard to the regional peculiar matters of Tsushima and the common theme on how to invigorate the region. In the background of the campaign which employs `stories` were concerns about a remote island accompanied by population outflow. The intentions of publication to introduce great people were surprisingly identical. The intention to make the young who leave the island have pride as Tsushima people has arisen from the idea that young islanders can introduce the island to the outside of Tsushima. It would be common to learn and use the local history in other regions which concern about population outflow. What is unique about Tsushima is that it should consider how to manage the relationship with Korea because it is situated in the border area. It goes through conflicts and troubles by allowing a lot of Korean tourists to enter the island, which represents the situation of Tsushima. `Stories` about the ancestors who wanted to keep friendly relationship by coping with the concerns are to vigorously explain the current situation of Tsushima. However, Tsushima has not been considered as `a community` not only historically but also geographically. Therefore, it is necessary to study how to share the local historical story throughout the prefecture and how to unite the entire Tsushima.
