This study aims to reveal the role of Buddhism as socio-political ideology, which was introduced to the Korean peninsula. The introduction of Buddhism was a remarkable incident, where Korea accepted a foreign ideology as its leading national ideology for the first time in its history. On that account, it would be very important to reveal the nature of the incident. Accepting a new religion would affect not only the ideational area but also the society as a whole. Ideological change is closely related to socio-political changes. It is even more so when royal families played a critical role in introducing and certifying Buddhism as in the case of the era of the Three States. Since then, Buddhism has had significant impact on the political ideology in Korea. The introduction of Buddhism in Korea has played a critical role of driving a structural change in the society while establishing a new form of socio-political ideology. Moreover, the religious changes have been directly or indirectly related to political phenomena. Among various aspects of religious phenomena, political and social aspects determine the mode of existence of religion in reality. Buddhism-centric socio-political ideology established a type of relationship between state and Buddhism through institutionalization in Silla. Though it was not exposed explicitly, the institutionalized relationship required the ruler to do a continuous ethical introspection to prevent power abuse or corruption. Ethical duty of continuous introspection for the king and ruling elites was given through symbolic ritual conducted by Sangha. Therefore, the most important prerequisite for Sangha was to show exemplary ethical conduct to general public.
