Recently, the ecological river projects are actively practiced and their necessity is increasingly perceived as important. For the effective ecological vegetation restorations of channelized rivers, the optimum ecological environment and the appropriate plant community with right selections of tree species at the right density is essential. However, there often is an alternation of plant community due to an invasion of exotic/alien species after ecological river restoration projects. This trend is caused by a lack of research on the plant foundation and riparian vegetation as well as a lack of clear goals for the plant species and the vegetation density.
Therefore, when creating ecological rivers toward a desirable direction while undisturbing the water quality and water regulation important information such as appropriate plant community with selection of tree species at the right density for different planting foundation is needed. In this study, recently created ecological rivers and the well-preserved referential rivers in Gyeonggi Province are compared and analyzed to suggest an ecologically desirable low-water revetment vegetation restoration model. The main objective of this study is to provide the information essential for ecological river restoration and management through the suggested model.
To suggest an ecologically desirable low-water revetment vegetation restoration model, this study researched previous papers and selected three ecological rivers as study sites. Then, the basic characteristics of the rivers, planting foundation types, the surrounding site characteristics, and the vegetation of the investigation areas were evaluated. For the target research rivers, Gongneung River, Anyang River, and Hwangguji River are selected. In the same way as the assessment of the target research rivers, three referential rivers were assessed to support an ecologically desirable low-water revetment vegetation restoration model. For the three referential rivers, Bokhwa River, Yanghwa River, and Chungmi River are selected.
For the vegetation restoration model for low-water revetments, the plant species mentioned in other related research papers, the emergent and dominant species found at target research rivers, and the emergent species at referential rivers are comprehensively reviewed according to each foundation types, and the target species are identified with their appropriate densities calculated. When the model was derived, it was reviewed and revised by the experts to produce a final low-water revetment vegetation restoration model. To calculate the coverage value of target plant species for the model, plants(roots) of a specific species were counted and were averaged. The average number of plants with decimals were rounded to a whole value. To calculate the coverage per unit area of selected plant species for the model, the number of plants counted were divided by the average distance between the plants. The suggested vegetation restoration model is expected to be used as an important resource for selecting appropriate plant species and planting design as well as the maintenance for ecological river restoration within the Gyeonggi Province. The findings from this study are as follows.
First, for stone-based vegetation restoration model, Phragmites communis(reeds), Miscanthus sacchariflorus(common reeds), Salix gracilistyla(pussy willows), Persicaria hydropiper(water pepper), Elymus mollis(American dunegrass), Zizania latifolia(wild rices), and Artemisia selengensis(mugworts) were identified as target species. For vegetation structure, the coverage per unit area of the reeds, pussy willows, water peppers, American dunegrass, Elymus mollis(wild rices), and mugworts are suggested. As for the number of plants(roots) per unit area, reeds, pussy willows, water peppers, American dunegrass, wild rices, and mugworts are recommended. For the plant ranking, according to the plant height, is suggested as pussy willows>reeds, common reeds, wild rices>water peppers, American dunegrass, and mugworts. Lastly, the average slope of the stone foundation is recommended.
Second, for plant-based vegetation restoration model, reeds, common reeds, pussy willows, water peppers, and American dunegrass are selected as target species. For vegetation structure, the coverage per unit area of the reeds, common reeds, pussy willows, water peppers, and American dunegrass are suggested. As for the number of plants(roots) per unit area, reeds, pussy willows, water peppers, and American dunegrass are recommended. For the plant ranking, according to the plant height, is suggested as pussy willows>reeds, common reeds>water peppers, and American dunegrass. Lastly, the average slope of the plant foundation is recommended.
Third, because the lengths of low-water revetments vary, the coverage per unit area and the number of plants(roots) are suggested in ranges. The restoration model that suggests standards for appropriate plant species and their densities is expected to be essential for adaptive management of future ecological river construction projects.
The results of this study are applicable only to the ecological rivers within Gyeonggi Province. Therefore, the rivers outside the province will have different selection of plant species and coverage unit per area, as well as different vertical distribution which is dependent on the location of the embankment.
