The purpose of this paper is two-fold. One is to retrospectively view previous works in Korean oral history and the other is to prospectively search for a new paradigm. I have studied the epistemology and methodology of oral history and categorized the works into three paradigms. The first paradigm is of oral history as a social movement. It started with a series of collection of oral testimonies on the forbidden histories of comtemporary Korea since the mid-1980’s. The second paradigm is of a more complex view of oral history from the bottom. It has tried to search the counter-historical discourses against the official and elite cultures of history. This type of oral history has contributed to revealing invisible subjects of history to historical subjects. Due to some historians’ vigorous studies the voiceless subjects have been earned their places in the writing of a new history. The third paradigm is of the scholarly direction of oral history focusing on subject matters such as memory, identity, and narratives. The orality is seen not so much a way of probing historical facts and truth as a way of representation and reconstruction of history. This kind of study tends to look history as a direct by-product of the subject’s present social, political and cultural situations, but is less attentive to the history of culture upon which the subject is bounded. The three paradigms co-exist in the area of Korean oral history unlike its counterparts within Western oral history. This has resulted from the fact that Korea’s rapid growth of oral history following the fall of doctrinated political regimes. The strong desire to disclose untold stories under political and ideological turmoil powered the many oral history projects in Korea. Even if each paradigm shows a different epistemology, methodology and goal, the three paradigms together have made contributions to the development of Korean oral history.
There is a new fourth paradigm that has resulting from the digital revolution. Digital technology has made it possible for researchers to have full and easy access to oral data in order to collect, preserve, and utilize the said datal. Not only that, but digital technology will eventually change the consciousness and practice of populace with respect to oral history. Some evidences of such changes already appears within the activities of digital networks and social media. Volunteers actively join projects involving historical writing of their own lives, families, villages and communities, and the nation. During the course of oral history projects both researchers and volunteers/interviewees are aware of the importance of intersubjectivity. This will eventually lead to comprehension of the actual processes involved in the creation of oral history. Furthermore, I propose some fruitful methods for studying oral history such as ethnographic writing methodology, supplementary work with other data, and multi- and uni-disciplinary work. A new paradigm of oral history triggered and powered by the current digital technological innovations will lead to a better understanding of the complex and diverse history of human society and culture.
