韓國戰爭文學論序說 = Introduction to Korean War Literature

We often find that the terms with classification of literature in the history of Korean Literature are used without any mutual agreement. Especially the classification in the novel is not put in order by lack of clear idea of difference between the theme and matter.

The conventional classification in literatuere is not more than the mechanical classification by over-emphasizing the system for classification's sake. But the practical classification should be done by the flexible attitude which might pay attention to the object to be classified, the researching aim of scholar and his personal point of view.

(1) It was not until World War I that the war novels were written with clear thematic idea conscious of war. Before World War I, to be sure, there were not a few novels describing the war scenes, but they are noting but the novels using the war material.
(2) In genuine sense, the war literature, however plausible war scenes were described and however heroic stories were given realistically, is far from being the war literature, ifits theme has not concerned with war. Accordingly many war stories in Korean Literature can not belong to the war literatures, yet they could be permitted to belong to war literature with some reservations, by considering the thematic ambiguity intrinsic to the narrative epic, which has been taken as a matter of course even in western literature.
(3) The war literature should be defined in connection with history, because the kind and aim of 'form and matter' of literary works could be influenced by the historical circumstances of the age. Besides, we find the nationality expressed in the work to be the other characteristics of war literature.
(4) In some situation, we have to make a clear difference between the patriotic literature and war literature upon the intention. This is why we have to be careful to find out the chauvinistic traits and aggressive intention hidden in works, which ought to be excluded from war literature.
(5) The historical literature can include several themes within itself using the historical facts as material, whereas the war literature can even use the imaginative war scenes which could suggest the historical facts as war material upon the war theme.

To define the Korean War Literature some suggestions are given as follows.
(1) The material of war literature can be found not only among the historical facts, but also among the narrations of the establishing state or the heroes.
(2) With this, the stories concerning the imaginative war scenes can be described.
(3) In the preceding centuries, the war literature was a kind of patriotic literature in terms of the characteristics. This is why the Confucious precept of loyalty towards king has come to be the common theme.
(4) Most of the war literature has not failed in emphasizing the filial piety towards the parents.
(5) The thematic ambiguity and simplicity in Korean War Literature should be take as a matter of course as is the case with classic works in Korean Literature.

The followings are required to be the key indications in studying the characteristics of Korean War Literature.
(1) The heaven workship and the idea of peace are influenced by through the milieu.
(2) The shamanism as native faith has a great influence on it.
(3) Being sustained by the Confucious culture, loyalty towards king and filial piety towards the parents are the main aspects of morality.
(4) The sweeping devastation and sufferings of war inflicting the nation couldn't be left out.

The heaven worship and the idea of peace which are framed by the milieu have been influenced by Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, with the result that…,.
(1) they established the despotic monarchial constitution which has been based on loyalty and filial piety.
(2) brought the predestined view of life and pessimism to the people.
(3) and made them familiar with the seclusive idea and escapism.
The stagnation of the war literature in Korea can be ascribed to the above mentioned three reasons.
