수용자 몽타주 중심의 영화서사 이해의 이론적 고찰 = A study on film narrative by focusing on Audience Montage

This study theorized the concept of 'Audience Montage' to identify the process of film narrative comprehension by audience. This is based on the expanded premise that the concept of film montage can be strategically utilized by the viewers.
Based on the fact that learners' literary knowledge cultivated in narrative education cannot be extended to the area of film understanding, the needs, and research trends, the importance of film education has been consistently mentioned in the current Korean language and literacy education curriculum.
However, despite its influence, film is not likely to be presented in the classroom. Therefore, this study focused on film montage, especially the Audience Montage, to develop a narrative understanding education plan that utilizes the characteristics of film narrative.
Audience Montage is distinct from the director's montage. The concept of Audience Montage refers to the new montage created by the audience who actively reassembles the shots and the entire effect in the film. It indicates that it aims to produce individualized interpretations for each viewer.
The understanding of film narrative centered on the Audience Montage is described as the following process. Film is a text composed of a combination of various shots. The editing transcends time, space and many other elements through the gaps formed in the audience's imagination. The montage created by the audience is just as important as the director's, as it allows the audience to discover montage effects that were not originally intended. Through this montage, viewers can actively engage with the narrative and reassemble the shots according to their own criteria, creatively reconstructing the time, space, or image and sound of the film.
The essence of this study is to flesh out the viewer's thought system on understanding film narrative by converting it into the concept of Audience Montage. Therefore significance of film narrative comprehension education centered on Audience Montage is that it provides the visual process of audience understanding through the montage which has remained abstract.
This leads to the possibility of presenting an expanded narrative education through the active intervention of learners.
