The pastoral predilection is prominent from the beginning of Faulkner's literary career. This essay is an attempt to interpret this tendency in relation with the pastoral tradition.
Pastoral can be divided into many types but broadly into two: “Arcadian” and “Bucolic” pastoral. Arcadian pastoral is concerned with the analysis of love such as in the Virgilian Eclogues. In contrast, Bucolic pastoral, with its origin in agricultural precepts, is primarily concerned with man's relation to nature as in the Georgics. Both types of pastoral can be traced in the Faulknerian text. While Arcadian pastoral is comparatively prominent in his poems and early novels, the Bucolic mode becomes more and more important in relation with themes of land. At the beginning Faulkner tries to express his fascination on the stylized world of sensual beauty through the leitmotif of Arcadian pastoral. And then, his interest gradually moves toward Bucolic pastoral with an underlying criticism on modern civilization. “Natural order”, the essence of Bucolic pastoral, serves as the moral criteria to assess the disordered aspects of modernity.
On the other hand, the essential strategy of the pastoral was to make simple people express strong feelings in learned and fashionable language. This pattern implicitly includes the moral concept that simple country life is superior to sophisticated city life. In this perspective, we can better understand Faulkner' enigmatic characters such as Darl or the reverend Shegog etc. Nevertheless, Faulkner does not miss the ironic contradiction of the pastoral itself. Uneducated black people and the poor white not only have dignity but also cowardice and malignancy. Moreover, anti-pastoral elements inspire satiric laughter as well as irony. Pastoral and anti-pastoral coexist in his writing simultaneously.
However, while the anti-pastoral satire is eminent in Faulkner's novels, the essence of the pastoral is not undermined. It is the pastoral's versatility to contain tensions between country and city, nature and civilization, the human and the non-human, retreat and return that made the form so durable and so fascinating to many writers including Faulkner. Today, as the environmental crisis becomes widespread, pastoral gains an increasing dominance in American literature.
