This study aims to investigate colors to improve the usability of kiosks for the elderly. With therecent normalization of non-face-to-face living, the use of digital services has increased, emphasizing the need for labor replacement and simplification through automation. Unmanned kiosk systems are being used in various industries, further increasing the importance of kiosk usability. While the introduction of kiosks has positive aspects, it also presents negative issues. In particular, the digital divide faced by the elderly is more pronounced in kiosk usage. Elderly individuals have a reduced color perception range due to visual conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration, making color an important factor affecting their kiosk usability. To enhance the usability of kiosks for the elderly, research is needed to explore the use of appropriate colors on kiosk screens that can compensate for their visual issues.
In the literature review phase, theoretical considerations regarding kiosks in the non-face-to-face era and the usability of kiosks for the elderly were discussed. The study also investigated the color perception characteristics of the elderly based on aging.
In the experimental phase, an application was developed to experiment with kiosk usability based on the color perception range of the elderly according to previous research. The experiment tanalyzed the results with a focus on the brightness difference between the kiosk's background color (W color) and the payment button color. The results indicated that as the brightness difference increased, the processing time decreased. Interestingly, the R color, with the highest brightness difference from the background color W, had a shorter processing time compared to the Bk color, which had the maximum brightness difference. This suggests that not only colors with significant brightness differences but also colors using long-wavelength anomalous trichromacy can help improve usability for the elderly.
However, the study has limitations as it did not consider that not only the kiosk's background color but also brand colors can affect the cognitive abilities of the elderly. Future research should consider various factors, including brand colors, in selecting appropriate colors for kiosk screens, which is expected to be essential in enhancing readability for the elderly. Through efforts like this, it is hoped that the quality of life for the elderly can be improved and contribute to bridging the digital divide.
