Showing unity and variety, musical form of variation has been changed with the passage of time. The variation appears in all musical genre, being used as a way of off the skills of the composens' ability the 16th century. In this way, variation had been formel as a musical genre since 16 century.
The variation form in the 16th century attempted a simple change of melody and rhythm of the theme from the folk melodies of secular songs or dance music in Italy, Spain, and England. In the Baroque era, it was noticed that the form was attempted to change the upper melodies by decorating with contrapuntal characters and Bass Ostinato.
Through out the classical period, variation was the form to develope the music dramatically by changing the rhythm, harmony, tempo, texture, and etc., still sustaining the basic form of the theme.
Since 1750 in Europe impromptu performance at the social parties of high society, hence short occasions of music were lively developed. Therefore, Mozart a great master of the Classical period preferred the variation, so that he could show off his performance impromptu in a brilliant way. His variations were simple and easy. They were written in the form of binary or ternary form. In this stusy, one of the most popular work K.265, 「12 Variations on Little star 」and found the followings.
Firstly, variation was made by using freely expressed ornamental melodies, changing rhythm, tempo, melody, key, and meter. And yet, the figure was still within the simple and classical form.
Secondly, tonality was exchanged minor and major, and changing of Adagio as usedas a slow movement of sonata. There was beat changes in one variation.
Thirdly, the nonharmonic tones, appoggiatura tone, neighboring tone, escape tone, passing tone, pedal point and suspension were used, for the change of harmony chromatic progress was often used. Also diminished 7th harmony was used.
Finally, in the texture, homophonic technique and contrapuntal technique, one of polyphonic techniques, were used. And the length of the variation was changed with coda in Var XII
That I could know while analyzing Mozart's variation was firstly the simple themes as the easy memorizable melodies, and these melodies are variously expressed in the well textured structure and showing the characters of the figure variation
Though the relative importance of his variation in his works is not high, it is true that he completed the form of variation as no less artistic work than other musical genre and affected to the later generation.
Especially an appearance of the figure variaion figure elements in the early and middle works of Beethoven was influenced by impromptu variation characters of Mozart.
In the Romantic period, it was a period of the characterized variation that changed the characters of the themes by using of free tonality and bold variation technique started from the late works of Beethoven.
In the 20th century, I found the free development of motive centering on Shoberg, used 12 tones technique, started, and the Free Variation period that attempted freedom of independence of harmony and length of the variation.
As above, in this study, the changes of the variation according to the periods and technical character were found through its historical consideration, and the character of the figure variation was correctly understood by analysing Mozart's work, K.265 「12 Variations on Little star」. Therefore, 1 believe that it was helpful for students to understand the variations easier. Besides since the characters of each period influenced on mutual works with systematical relationship, I believe various forms of variation will be appeared in many musical genres.
