대학 글쓰기센터 비교과 프로그램의 현황과 과제 = The Current State and Tasks of Extracurricular Programs at University Writing Centers

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purposes of this study are to analyze extracurricular programs of various programs managed by a university writing center and improve problems identified in the process. Extracurricular programs hold importance in that they start with active and free thinking, which is one of intrinsic attributes of writing, compared with programs related to subject domains and are capable of accepting students’ practical needs fast and converting them into educational activities. Most of previous studies, however, focused on introducing programs managed by the writing center of each university and presenting their achievements like a report. The present study was organized to analyze extracurricular programs at Dongguk University(Gyeongju Campus), Keimyung University, Sogang University and Chosun University where they ran a writing center relatively actively and make a proposal to improve problems identified in them.
Extracurricular programs managed by the writing centers of the four universities were categorized into the areas of counseling and instruction for writing, special lectures on writing, tutor education, and writing contests. Counseling and instruction for writing covered online and offline counseling, connections with the writing subject, and limits on the types of writing eligible for counseling and instruction. Special lectures on writing covered the basic content of writing, self-introductions reflecting demands from students, and reports. Tutor education, which all of the four universities put a serious focus on, provided seminars and workshops to reinforce education for counseling experts. Writing contests usually had essays on light topics submitted, trying to motivate students to write.
There were several problems with the extracurricular programs managed by the writing centers of the four universities including the lack of foundation for counseling and instruction for writing, similar extracurricular programs among the universities, special lectures and seminars as one-time programs, lack of follow-up counseling and instruction for writing, no discriminating points in the level and content of learning from the subject of basic writing, and evaluation of extracurricular programs’ outcomes based on short-term indicators.
The study proposed solutions for these problems including enough budgets allocated to a writing center, supports of authority and finance to recruit and educate tutors, development of distinctive programs fit for the characteristics of each university, substantial special lectures and seminars based on long-term plan instead of one-time programs, follow-up counseling and instruction as extracurricular programs after a semester, development of extracurricular programs with discriminating features from the subject of basic writing, and evaluation of students’ actual qualitative outcomes in a long run rather than evaluation with short-term outcome indicators.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 대학의 글쓰기센터에서 운영하는 다양한 프로그램 중 비교과 프로그램을 분석하고 이를 통해 나타난 문제점을 개선하려는 것을 목적으로 한다. 비교과 프로그램은 교과 영역과 관련된 프로그램에 비해 글쓰기가 가진 본래적 속성인 능동적이고 자유로운 사고에서 출발한다는 점과 학생들의 실질적 요구를 빠르게 수용하여 이를 교육 활동으로 전환할 수 있다는 점에서 중요하다. 그러나 기존 연구의 대부분은 각 대학의 글쓰기센터에서 운영한 프로그램을 소개하고 그 성과를 제시하는 보고서의 성격이 강하였다. 이 연구는 비교적 활발히 글쓰기센터가 운영되고 있는 동국대(경주), 계명대, 서강대, 조선대의 비교과 프로그램을 분석하고 그 속에 나타난 문제점 개선을 위한 제언으로 구성되었다.
4개 대학 글쓰기센터에서 운영하고 있는 비교과 프로그램은 크게 글쓰기 상담지도, 글쓰기 관련 특강, 튜터 교육, 글쓰기 공모전 등이 있다. 글쓰기 상담지도는 온라인 상담과 오프라인 상담, 글쓰기 교과와 연계, 상담 지도하는 글의 종류에 제한 유무 등으로 나타났다. 글쓰기 관련 특강은 글쓰기의 기초적 내용과 학생들의 요구를 수용한 자기소개서, 리포트 쓰기 등이 있다. 튜터 교육은 4개 대학 모두 중점적으로 이루어지고 있으며 세미나나 워크숍을 통해 글쓰기 상담 전문가로서의 교육을 강화하고 있다. 글쓰기 공모전은 주로 가벼운 주제의 에세이를 공모하여 학생들의 글쓰기에 대한 동기를 부여하기 위해 노력하고 있다.
4개 대학 글쓰기센터 비교과 프로그램에 나타난 문제점은 글쓰기 상담지도를 위한 기반이 부족하다는 점, 대학들이 서로 비슷한 비교과 프로그램이 운영되고 있다는 점, 특강이나 세미나가 일회성 프로그램에 그치고 있다는 문제, 사후 글쓰기 상담지도가 충분히 이루어지지 않는다는 점, 기초 글쓰기 교과와의 수준이나 학습 내용에서 변별점이 분명하지 않다는 점, 비교과 프로그램의 결과가 단기간 나타나는 지표에 대한 평가로 이루어지고 있다는 것 등이다.
이를 해결하기 위해서는 글쓰기센터의 예산을 충분히 확보할 수 있어야 하며 튜터를 선발하고 교육할 수 있는 권한과 재정적 뒷받침이 선행되어야 한다는 점, 각 대학의 특성에 맞는 개성있는 프로그램 개발이 필요하다는 점, 일회성에 그치는 프로그램이 아니라 장기적 계획 속에 내실 있는 특강과 세미나가 되어야 할 것, 학기가 끝난 뒤에 비교과 프로그램으로서 사후 상담지도가 필요하다는 점, 기초 글쓰기 교과와 변별력을 가진 비교과 프로그램이 개발되어야 한다는 점, 단기간의 성과 지표 중심의 평가를 지양하고 학생들이 실제 어느 정도 질적 성과를 얻을 수 있었는지를 장기적 안목에서 평가하여야 한다는 점 등을 들 수 있다.
