Sijiulu(思舊錄) is a work written by the scholar and literati Huang Zongxi (黃宗羲, 1610~1695) during his later years, around 1692-1693 (the 31st-32nd year of the Kangxi era). It records his memories of 117 individuals from Liu Zongzhou(劉宗周) to Mu Xie(木皙). Sijiulu includes not only his teacher Liu Zongzhou but also senior scholars who provided academic guidance and personal encouragement to the young Huang Zongxi, as well as literary figures with whom he actively collaborated. All the individuals recorded in the work shared the common feature of having interacted with Huang Zongxi before the founding of the Qing Dynasty.
This paper translates and annotates the records of 15 individuals among the 117 mentioned in Sijiulu, including Liu Zongzhou, Wen Zhenmeng(文震孟), He Dongru(何棟如), Chen Jiru(陳繼儒), Shi Pan(史磐), Fan Jingwen(范景文), Ni Yuanlu(倪元璐), Jin Xuan(金鉉), Shi Bangyao(施邦曜), Qi Biaojia(祁彪佳), Gong Yonggu(鞏永固), Fang Zhenru(方震孺), Wei Xuelian(魏學濂), Zhou Yanzuo(周延祚), and Li Sunzhi(李孫之). These individuals can be categorized into three groups: teachers and seniors, those who chose martyrdom, and the descendants of the Donglindang. Sijiulu offers various accounts of the historical context during the Ming-Qing transition, including events and figures Huang Zongxi personally witnessed and experienced, along with his opinions on these matters. Additionally, it contains numerous references to works and books written by these individuals, as well as quoted poetry and prose, revealing the literary traces of the time.
By translating the original text of Sijiulu and providing detailed annotations, this paper not only lays the foundation for the author's subsequent research into the literary aspects of the work, but also contributes to interdisciplinary studies on the Ming-Qing transition by offering a valuable resource on the intellectuals Huang Zongxi interacted with before the Qing Dynasty's establishment.
