The importance of repentance in the New Testament does not require a long explanation. John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus, begins his ministry in the wilderness by preaching the “baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins” (Mark 1:4). Repentance is also a central theme in Jesus’ preaching of the kingdom of God. The first message Jesus proclaimed at the beginning of his ministry was “to repent and believe in the gospel, for the time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is near” (Mark 1:15). Jesus’ disciples also inherit his ministry by declaring the same repentance (Mark 6:12).
Thus, while the concept of repentance occupies a key position in the proclamation of Jesus and his disciples, it has often been pointed out that to Paul the term of repentance is infrequent. Given that the concept of repentance is still an important aspect of Paul’s mission statement in Acts, it is surprising that the term of repentance rarely appears in his own letters.
It is true that this phenomenon has raised doubts that Paul has made repentance relatively less important. Did Paul really see the concept of repentance as less important? I intend to show through this study that Paul is inheriting the concept of repentance Jesus proclaimed. To this end, I will examine his concept of repentance in his mission declaration, ethical exhortation, and theological statements.
The concept of repentance is by no means weak to him, since Paul frequently did not use the term repentance. Paul’s repentance proclamation, ethical exhortation, and theological statements are abundant in the concept of repentance. In particular, many ethical exhortations in his letters already presuppose or imply repentance.
Like other authors of the New Testament, Repentance to Paul is the human holistic response of God’s salvation in Jesus Christ. Therefore, repentance is not enough if it does not go beyond the change of mind and the repentance of sin to the change of life. Repentance is a determination to turn from sin and the reign of the world (earthly value) to God(see Mark 1: 14-15), and is a fundamental principle that enables the Christian to live a new life (sanctification) with faith.
