This research aims at understanding the change and development of burial processes and procession by analyzing related factors found in tombs belonging to the Baekje period. It is attempted to reconstruct mortuary practice of the Baekje based on literature surveys regarding Baekje and contemporaneous other kingdoms’ funerary custom. Furthermore implications of such mortuary practice to the Beakje society are discussed.
Ancient rulers had often built the gigantic tombs to show off their power and authority, which had stimulated to develop mortuary practices including burying grave goods such as daily items for afterlife and cult. Thus many aspects of ancient society are directly reflected on the grave goods. Apart from the primary aim to bury the deceased, grave goods are semantic cultural complex where political, economic and religious aspects of the society are tangled and and indeed are the remains of funeral ceremony.
Scarcity of research regarding mortuary practices is attributed to the limits and nature of archaeological data which are mostly tangible material remains. Rather than archaeology, other academic fields such as anthropology, ethnography, and religion studies mainly address such research themes. Often unplausible hypotheses were claimed due to scarcity of material evidence left in tombs and fundamental constrains of archaeological data.
Baekje’s tombs are the resources to provide materials illustrating cultures of Baekje, and royal tombs such as King Muryeong’s tombs are the most primary and essential dataset to understand history, culture, ideology, arts and international cultual exchange. One of the most significant data amongst burial goods of the King Muyreong’s tombs are two pieces of stone epitath stone plaque identifying the buried deceased in the tomb. From the record of these epitath, it is known that the king and queen’s bodies had been kept for 27 months before they were eventually laid in the tomb. Such practice is thought to have been originated from Chinese Confucious funeral custom of there years’ mourning, which led to the abundant comparative studies with Chinese mortuary practice.
The other event marked in the study of mortuary practice was the discovery of Jeongjisan archeological site in 1996. It brought a massive interest on King Muryeong’s mortuary practice by publication of study inferring the Jeongjisan site as a funerary chapel which preserved the body for three years. In addition, stone-piled archaeological features, which are assumed to be the venue for the ceremony inside the tombs cluster at the Suchonri site, Gongju. The archaeological data related to mortuary practice has been increasingly discovered.
The integrated research on various data found in Baekje’s tombs reached a conclusion that the mortuary practice had developed under the interaction between traditional indigenous practice with foreign custom associated with adoption of new type of burials. The summary of contents are as follows.
Firstly, the procession of cult in pit burial, a main tomb style of Mahan Confederation to Baekje, in particular during the Hanseong Baekje period, was reviewed. In contrast to the perceived assumption of using portable wooden coffin, it is revealed that the coffin was assembled inside the pit. Thus the procession of the pit burial tomb was carried out in this order as follows.
① to dig a pit ‣ ② to assembly a coffin, grave goods container ‣ ③ to place artifacts and infill the pit ‣ ④ to lay the body and offerings ‣ ⑤ to place the covering stone and offerings ,and to perform cults ‣ ⑥ to infill the pit and to perform cults and to bury ‣ ⑦ to construct the mound
It was suggested that the offerings were tributed at each stage. Jar tombs and pit burials were constructed at the outskirt of the pit and negative ditches, burial of potteries and iron tools, continuously perform cults in the ditches, cults on the mound.
Secondly, stone built burials which became the main burial style for the local rulers from the early 4th century AD maintained the interior structure similar to the previous pit burials despite the change of chamber construction material from wood to stone. It is inferred that the previous mortuary practice had persisted.
Thirdly, it was suggested that adoption of stone chamber burial marked the biggest change in mortuary practice of Baekje. A stone chamber burial with a side entrance indicates that the mainstream central Beakje elites accepted a large number of Chinese refugees and their tomb style due to its active expansion to the northwestern region. In addition, adoption of mass burial for a stone built burial with a side entrance force the indigenous local elites, who consistently kept the custom of individual stone-built tomb, to break old custom.
Such a conflict is well reflected in stone chambers with a side entrance constructed in the rural area far away from the Hanseong, the first capital in the mid fifth century AD. Compromised elements are represented as maintaining pit-style burials in a form of a stone chamber with a side entrance, individual tombs (one coffin for each tomb), construction of a coffin assembled with wooden plates and a wooden vault inside the chamber. It shows that conserved elements of indigenous mortuary practice were seen in the newly accepted burial style. In addition, the ritual place in rectangular stone-piled tombs had gradually lost its function as stone chamber tombs had been widely adopted with a change of cult performed inside the individual tomb.
Fourthly, the expansion of the stone burials with side entrance during the Ungjin-Sabi period, was noted. In the early 6th century, brick built chamber tomb of the Chinese Southern Dynasty’s style had strongly influenced, and its influence was reflected on a rectangular plan burial chambers, co-burial of a married couple and family, and a block wooden coffin with rings for carrying attached. Cults inside the ditches and burials around the pits were significantly decreased. Additional burial became relatively easier inside the stone chamber, and cults could be performed inside the chamber as well.
Considering the King Muryeong’s tomb and the Jeongjisna site in this period, mortuary custom was highly affected by that of Chinese. Epitaph stone plaques, mystic animal sculpture, Chinese imported goods, and three years mourning custom reflect the tradition of Chinese mortuary practice. In addition, certain actions such as breaking off the pottery and using covers as plates were considered to be the semantic symbolic gestures to transform them to be the dead’s belongings. So was the influence of Chinese custom.
Fifthly, the revival of mortuary practice from stone burials with side entrance to individual tomb, is noted. Local stone chamber burials located in the western coastal area far away from the capital shows the revival of an individual tomb with a rectangular chamber plan and more potteries placed than the capital region. Even in the Neongsan-ri tombs cluster in Sabi period, individual tombs were constructed at 7th Century AD. Such changes caused the reduced role of the entrance, and it is assumed to have influenced the stone chamber burial with a entrance wall. Some of these burials were constructed without consideration for additional burial.
It is summarized that the mortuary practice of Baekje with the base of stone built burial and pit burial originated from the Bronze and Iron Age was initially established with coffin, wooden container box and deep pit burial by the refugee from Buyeo-Goguryeo, then had a large change by introduction of the stone chamber tomb. Local people with a previous tradition accepted the stone chamber burial, but it took time to accept the family tomb mortuary practice. Despite the widespread of this new custom, the old tradition of individual tomb revived again with a change from mass burials to individual burial in a form of stone chamber burial with a side entrance.
Although it is generally perceived that changes of burial and mortuary practice were accompanied, but they did not alway coincidently occur, but it had depended on temporal and political context. This research demonstrates that burial styles could be changed by tradition of mortuary practice and beliefs regarding afterlife, contrasting to the norm that mortuary practice was always influenced by the burial style. Thus certain ideological aspects such as the tradition of mortuary practice played a role in the material cultural change, it can be identified by archaeological dataset.
