In Murayama Tomoyoshis book entitled Engekiteki Jijoden Dai-icbibu(Theatrical Autobiography Part One), there is a photograph of the interior of his home-cum-atelier that was called the triangle house. Murayama, one of tile pioneering artists of tile newly emerging art movement, of the Taisho era, had just returned from his studies in Germany and held an exhibition in June 1923 entitled The Second Exhibition of Murayama Tomoyoshis Conscious Constructivism in this very building that he designed by himself. Murayama, who advocated that architecture is the very art of the new age, not only turned his atelier into a work of formative art, but also used this interior as a place to exhibit his works and as a theatrical space for performances using bodily expressions.
Mavo, which was formed by the live artists, Kadowaki Shinro, Murayama Tomoyoshi, Oura Shuzo, Yanase Masamu and Ogata Kamenosuke, had a short life between 1923 and 1928. Nevertheless, in this short period of time, developed a wide array of artistic activities that were deemed provocative at times, including not only paintings and sculptures but also constructive elements, bodily expression" architecture and graphics that were either exhibited or published.
In tile article, I have focused on the space in which Mavo conducted their activities, and how the artists who were engaged in newly emerging art movements connected themselves with society and the urban environment of Tokyo, which was undergoing change after tile Great Kanto Earthquake. I have also aimed to explore the influence the urban space had on their artistic activities.
Murayama Tomoyoshi, who had absorbed knowledge and seen the works of Constructivism, Dadaism and Expressionism in Europe earlier on, became an impetus for Mavo activities. Important to note is that some of his main activities took place in the urban space of Tokyo. The Great Kanto Earthquake of September 1923 destroyed the city and caused turmoil to the society. Mavo was also forced to stop its activities by the earthquake disaster, but later, when it resumed its activities Mavo showed a proactive attitude by decorating barracks and other architecture, which eventually led to the exploration of constructive elements and bodily expressions. Furthermore, the Mavoists started to choose spaces such as the streets and inside cafes places that were extensions of daily life space and held exhibitions there. Their aggressiveness, destructive nature, and their bustling energy resonated with the urban space that was once destroyed and now recovering from the disasterous earthquake. This allowed for even more vigorous constructive elements and bodily expressions. In other words, amid the rapid expansion of urban space after the earthquake, the artists found ways to transcend various existing frameworks and created new ideas at times by conjoining their activities with commercial things.
Okada Tatsuo recalled, We were for the first time forgiven, nurtured and granted presence only because it was after the earthquake, when the social picture was colonial, and the atmosphere was as if new frontiers were being opened. Many of the works by the Mavoists were ephemeral and self-destructive, thereby leaving only a few behind. This has become an impediment for the research of their activities, but to look at it the other way, this was the merit and demerit that resulted from the fact that they took real spaces and not fictitious spaces as their activity grounds. The idea of space for the newly emerging artistic movements of the Taisho era meant a figurative space as well as a social space, while the works were engendered from the city itself as well as the changes that took place in the space, as artists pursued their own vision of art in urban life. Needless to say, their radical methods of expression were not always understood and wholly accepted. Yet the changes in awareness towards space, which developed via the urban space, was the very ele
