신유의 신학 = A Theology of Divine Healing

The purpose of this paper is to make the gospel of the divine healing theologically which the Korean Evangelical Holiness Church is proud of. Here are some points to note. First, I would like to be aware of the divine healing as God’s ‘charis’, and not as power of a person with ‘charistma’. Through the debate with the cessationism, I intend to rescue the gospel of the divine healing from the charistma-centered problems. Second, by rejecting the inevitable link between sin and disease, we will not make the sick more sinners. Third, we want to reveal the ultimate purpose of divine healing by understanding the divine healing as the holistic recovery of life, not simply the healing of the body. Fourth, we intend to expand the scope of divine healing by understanding God's Healing as the activity of God’s creation-salvation that heals not only man but the sick world as a whole. The God who does restore the human body also restores and renews the sick world. From this point of view, our argument is as follows. God's healing is the message of the gospel that we can never give up in our day. It is true, however, that by understanding divine healing as a phenomenon of charismaticism, it is reluctant to accept the healing of God because of the problems of charismaticism. But in the history of the Church, God’s healing has continued, and it is no exception today. However, we should not overlook the fact that the subject of the Healing is God, and do not attribute divine healing to the power of a person with charistma. Also, the scene of the divine healing should be a open and public place called the church. The church is a place where the weak are gathered together without shame, and it is a place where all the saints join for this weakness and seek God's mercy together, and also the place of experiencing the work of the Holy Spirit in strengthening the sick. At this time, the sick should not be defined as sick sinners in the mechanism of sin-disease-repentance-healing. The sick person reminds us of the weakness of all human beings, and it enables us to realize the fundamental existential situation of human that is inevitable to wait for the mercy of God. The church must always be open to these weak beings and provide them with a new community of life through the gospel of divine healing. In this case, the divine healing should be understood as the creation-saving activity of God that restores life through the healing of the body. Divine healing means the creative providence of God, which overcomes the forces of death surrounding man and the created world and leads them into ‘regnum gloriae’. The theology of the divine healing is not a specific denominational theology confined to the Korean Evangelical Holiness Church but the great faith tradition to be shared and developed by the korean church and the world church dreaming of a new revival after the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
