관계적 시간성 기반 공공휴게공간 디자인 특성에 관한 연구 -멜버른 사례를 중심으로- = A Study on the Design Characteristics of Public Rest Areas based on Relational Temporality -Focused on Melbourne Cases-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

(연구배경 및 목적) 공공휴게공간은 사적공간과 공적공간, 일상과 비일상, 과거와 현재, 현재와 미래, 사람과 사람을 유기적으로 연결하는 공간으로, 사용자 간의 상호작용과 공동체 형성을 촉진하는 중요한 역할을 한다. 이러한 공간은 공공의 가치를 구현해야 한다는 기본 방향을 가지고 있지만, 공공의 가치를 효과적으로 반영하는 방법에 대한 연구는 아직 미흡하다. 이에 본 연구는 공공휴게공간에서 사용자 간의 상호작용을 촉진하고 공공의 가치를 반영할 수 있는 소통의 매개체로서 ‘관계적 시간성’ 개념을 도입하고자 한다. 관계적 시간성은 사용자와 공간 간의 상호작용을 통해 다차원적인 시간적 경험을 형성하는 개념으로, 이를 통해 공공휴게공간의 디자인 특성을 분석하고, 공공디자인에 대한 새로운 시각을 제시하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. (연구방법) 본 연구는 선행연구 검토, 문헌조사, 현장조사, 사례분석을 통해 다음의 순서로 진행되었다. 첫째, 관계적 시간성 개념과 공공휴게공간에 관한 선행연구를 검토하고, 관계적 시간성과 공공휴게공간의 관계성을 파악하였다. 둘째, 멜버른의 공공휴게공간에 관한 문헌조사와 현장조사를 통해, 멜버른 공공휴게공간 디자인의 지향점을 이해하고, 관계적 시간성을 중심으로 공공휴게공간을 분석하였다. 셋째, 사례분석을 통해 도출된 결과를 바탕으로 관계적 시간성 기반 공공휴게공간 디자인 특성을 도출하고, 디자인 방향성을 제시하였다. (결과) 분석 결과, 관계적 시간성 기반 공공휴게공간은 다음과 같은 중요한 디자인 특성을 지닌다. 첫째, 비정형적이고 입체적인 공간 구성은 공간에서의 동적 경험을 강화하며, 사용자가 다양한 각도에서 공간을 인식하도록 유도하여 몰입적 시간성을 촉진한다. 둘째, 자연과 인공 요소의 융합을 통해 발생적 시간성이 강화되며, 사용자는 개인적인 서사를 형성하고 자연과 인공적 환경 간의 조화를 경험하게 된다. 셋째, 경계가 완화된 유기적 디자인은 사선적 시간성을 촉진하여 사용자가 예상치 못한 방식으로 공간을 탐험하며 새로운 시간적 경험을 하도록 유도한다. 넷째, 역사와 현재의 교차구성으로 형성되는 다층적 시간성은 사용자가 시간의 층위를 체험하고 다양한 시간적 내러티브를 형성할 수 있도록 유도한다. (결론) 관계적 시간성 기반 공공휴게공간은 사용자의 다양한 시간적 경험을 가능하게 하며, 사용자의 몰입도와 참여를 증진시키고, 사용자들의 인식을 전환시켜 공공적 관계를 형성하기 위한 중요한 방법으로 작용한다. 이러한 연구 결과는 향후 공공디자인 프로젝트에서 개인적, 공동체적 연결을 지원하는 공공공간의 역할에 대한 심도 있는 이해를 제공하며, 새로운 디자인 방향성에 대한 중요한 시사점을 제시한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

(Background and Purpose) Public rest areas serve as spaces that organically connect private and public realms, the everyday and the extraordinary, the past and the present, the present and the future, as well as individuals with one another. These areas play a significant role in fostering interaction and community building among users. However, the question remains: how can the value of the public be effectively manifested in these spaces? To address this, this study introduces the concept of ‘relational temporality’ as a medium for communication, which facilitates interactions between users and spaces. Relational temporality encompasses immersive, emergent, and diagonal temporal experiences, which expand user awareness, enhance interactions, and foster public relationships. This study aims to explore the application of relational temporality in public rest areas, analyze its design characteristics, and propose a new theoretical approach to public rest area design that aligns with the public good. (Method) This study was conducted in the following sequence through a review of previous studies, literature research, field surveys, and case analysis. First, prior research on the concept of relational temporality and public rest spaces was reviewed to understand the relationship between relational temporality and public rest spaces. Second, literature research and field surveys on public rest areas in Melbourne were conducted to understand the design orientation of Melbourne’s public rest areas and analyze them with a focus on relational temporality. Third, based on the results derived from the case analysis, design characteristics of public rest spaces grounded in relational temporality were identified, and design directions were suggested. (Results) The analysis revealed the following important design characteristics of public rest areas based on relational temporality. First, the irregular and three-dimensional spatial composition enhances dynamic experiences within the space, encouraging users to perceive the space from various perspectives, thereby promoting immersive temporality. Second, the fusion of natural and artificial elements enhances emergent temporality, allowing users to form personal narratives and experience harmony between natural and man-made environments. Third, the organic design with softened boundaries promotes diagonal temporality, leading users to explore the space in unexpected ways and experience new temporal dimensions. Fourth, multi-layered temporality allows users to experience a space where historical significance and present-day life coexist, enabling the formation of various temporal narratives. (Conclusions) Public rest spaces based on relational temporality enable diverse temporal experiences for users, enhancing their engagement and participation while shifting their perceptions to foster public relationships. These research findings provide a deeper understanding of the role of public spaces in supporting both individual and communal connections in future public design projects, offering important insights into new design directions.
