2. Does the development of the five components of infants' symbolic play differ among month age groups?
2-1. Does the level of decontextualization differ among month age groups?
2-2. Does the level of thematic content differ among month age groups?
2-3. Does the level of script organization differ among month age groups?
2-4. Does the level of self-other relations differ among month age groups?
2-5. Does the level of language function differ among month age groups?
3. What kind of qualities do different month age groups have in terms of the five components of infants' symbolic play?
3-1. What kind of qualities do 17 to 19 month-olds have in terms of the five components of infants' symbolic play?
3-2. What kind of qualities do 20 to 22 month-olds have in terms of the five components of infants' symbolic play?
3-3. What kind of qualities do 23 to 25 month-olds have in terms of the five components of infants' symbolic play?
3-4. What kind of qualities do 26 to 28 month-olds have in terms of the five components of infants' symbolic play?

3-7. What kind of qualities do 35 to 37 month-olds have in terms of the five components of infants' symbolic play?
The subjects of this study are 120 infants who attended daycare centers in Seoul and Suwon, Korea. Their age ranges from 17 to 37 months. The subjects were divided into seven groups: Group 1 (17 to 10 months). Group 2 (20-22 months), Group 3 (23-25 months), Group 4 (26-28 months), Group 5 (29-31 months), Group 6 (32-34 months), and Group 7 (35-37 months).
The infants were videotaped for a total of five 5-minute sessions, in which they engaged in house play, block play, and manipulation play. After the infants' play was transcribed, it was analyzed by means of event sampling. In addition, the level of the five constructs were evaluated, according to Westby's Developmental Play Scale.
After the data were analyzed, the frequency of symbolic play was analyzed in terms of percentages. In further analyses, statistical tools such as one-way ANOVA and Scheffe's post-verification were used. The developmental qualities of the five constructs of symbolic play were also analyzed qualitatively.
The results of the study are as follows:
1. Each month age group differs from one another in terms of the frequency of infants' symbolic play. The frequency of infants' symbolic play increased, as their month age increased, whereas the frequency of their pre-symbolic play decreased.
2. Different groups showed different levels of the development of the five constructs of infants' symbolic play.
The level of decontextualiztion, thematic content, script organization, self-other relation, and language function became high, as month age increased. Infants used real objects and life-like props in the process of decontextualization. They used object substitution and language to invent props and set scenes, as their month age increased. As for thematic content, infants first engaged in familiar everyday activities and then pretended to be parents or caregivers. So they performed activities of people familar to them. As for script organization, infants first had only short isolated schema. Then they displayed two or more schema combinations, as their month age increased. As for self-other relations, infants first engaged self-directed activities. Later, they did peer-directed, teacher-directed, or doll-directed activities, as their month age increased. As for language function, infants first used language in order to meet their needs and satisfy their desires. Then they used language to request information, comment on activity of self, and comment on dolls, as their month age increased.
3. Each month age group had different qualities in terms of the five constructs of infants' symbolic play. The seven groups (Group 1 through Group 7) showed different qualities in terms of decontextualization, thematic content, script organization, self-other relation, and language function.
1) 17 to 19 month olds' symbolic play was self-representational. They used language as a means to convey their needs and desires. Their thematic content was familiar to everyday activities, such as eating, drinking, or sleeping.
2) 20 to 22 month olds' symbolic play was characterized by flexible thinking that allowed object substitution, differentiation of object recognition, and decontexualiztion as a result of increasing knowledge of the relation between human beings and objects. Infants first engaged in self-directed activities. Later, they did peer-directed, teacher-directed, or doll-directed activities. As for thematic content, they performed activities familiar to mothers. They used language in order to interact with others and to determine the names of objects.
3) Dolls played the role of agents in 23 to 25 month olds' symbolic play. Elaborated isolated schema appeared in their symbolic play, as recognition of the relation between human beings and objects increased. They requested information or asked questions using language in order to verify the relation between human beings and objects.
4) The characteristics of 26 to 23 month olds were different from those of 17 to 19 month olds or 20 to 22 month olds. This group was characterized by object substitution, using language to set scenes, conversations and role assignment which are obligatory in compensatory play, and the language and behavior which are suitable to the roles.
5) 29 to 31 month olds made use of props which are needed for the roles the infants play in their symbolic play, using object substitution. The script organization consisted of elaborated isolated schema. The thematic content was eating or baby-sitting related to the infants' everyday life. Isolated schema appeared in the make-up play familiar to mothers. Elementary-level expressions appeared in the doctor play. The compensatory play in which infants play doctor-patients or driver-passengers was characterized by the reversibility of roles. The two infants in the play switched their roles.
6) 32 to 34 month olds substituted various objects in their symbolic play. The substituted objects were those which were not familiar to them. As for thematic content, the make-up play was coherently organized as a series of episodes. The doctor play focused on medical instruments. The role which infants were playing could be recognized by their language.
7) 35 to 37 month olds substituted one object with two other objects in their symbolic play. They expressed the location and the state of the play through language. They built three-dimensional structures such as using blocks to build ships. The male-up play was expanded into the beauty salon play. The doctor play became diverse and included specific medical treatments. Infants talked and acted depending on their roles in the associated play. Infants used dolls as participants in their symbolic play. The largest quantity of language appeared in this period. The script in this period was the language that infants used. As for language function, infants expressed the emotion of dolls in projecting. They used different styles of language depending on the listener to enhance comprehension.
