The present study examined belief in four-sided Buddhist statues created in the Unified Shilla Dynasty, the background of the creation, and the identities of Buddhas in four-sided Buddhist statues. Four-sided Buddhist statues, which are the embodiments of faith in the four Buddhas in the Buddhist Elysium extending to the east, south and west and north, were created by carving the four sides of a stone pillar or stone pagoda.
Four-sided Buddhas appear first in Geumgwangmyeonggyeong and Gwanbulsammaehaegyeong written in the 5^(th) century, and they bear the character of the Present Foreign-Land Buddhas guarding the four directions, inheriting the East, South, West and North Buddhas described in the Lotus Sutra and the Amitabha Sutra of Mahayanist Buddhism in its early period. With the establishment of Tantric Buddhism in its mid period since the 7^(th) century, such four-sided Buddhas evolved into ones identical with Maha Vairocanna leading people to Buddhahood through awakening rather than the four-sided Foreign-Land Buddhas.
Four-sided Buddhist statues appeared first for expressing the scene of Shakyamuni’s Buddhist mass in India during the 4^(th)~5^(th) century. From the 8^(th) century, four-sided Buddhist statues were created also by combining the five-sided or four-side Buddhist statues of the Geumgang line in Tantric Buddhism in its mid period with the scene of Shakyamuni’s Buddhist mass.
In China, various forms of four-sided Buddhist statues were created during the 6th century including separate four-sided Buddhist statues on the central stone pillar inside stone caves, small pagodas and tombstones and those on the four sides of sharira containers. According to inscriptions, some of four-sided Buddhist statues in the 6^(th)~8^(th) century were created based on Geumgwangmyeonggyeong or Gwanbulsammaehaegyeong but most of them consisted of Buddhas popular during the age. From the 9th century, five-sided and four-sided Buddhist statues created based on Geumgang-line sutras of Tantric Buddhism in its mid period began to appear, which suggests that faith in the four Buddhas was changed by Tantric Buddhism in its mid period imported from India.
In Korea, four-sided Buddhist statues were created from the Period of the Three Kingdoms. At that time, four-sided Buddhist statues were built out of wishes to defend and expand the land in all directions. In the Unified Shilla Dynasty, faith in four-sided Buddhas developed in combination with wishes for national defense, belief in relieving Buddha, and faith in Shilla as a Buddhist Land, and belief in the Medicine Buddha was greatly prevalent, and as a result four-sided Buddhist statues were created with four Buddhas who were widely worshipped in those days. In addition, during the early and mid 10^(th) century, there appeared four-sided Buddhist statues in the same form as that of Geumgang-line four-sided or five-sided Buddhist statues. This is probably the influence of Tantric Buddhist sutras and archive records imported by Buddhist monks who studied Tantric Buddhism in its mid period in China and returned to Shilla in the 8^(th)~9^(th) century.
Four-sided Buddhist statues erected in the Unified Shilla Dynasty are largely divided into those on stone pillars and those on stone pagodas, and some of them were carved on the four sides of sharira containers. Four-sided Buddhist statues on stone pillars show the style of early four-sided Buddhist statues, having one, two or three Buddhas on the four sides of the stone pillar and the main Buddha on a side. Four-sided Buddhist statues on stone pagodas have a Buddha on each side of the body panels on the 1^(st) tier, without distinguishing the main Buddha as in four-sided Buddhist statues on stone pillars. As to the posture of four-sided Buddhist statues created during this period, those on stone pillars show both seated and standing images, but those on stone pagoda are mostly seated and some of them show reclined Maitreya Buddha.
On the other hand, this study compared the position, posture and hand sign of each statue with sutras related to four-sided Buddhas in order to identify the name of the four Buddhas. In addition, we compared them with Buddhist statues created in the same period whose name was identified by inscriptions or icons. According to the results, the identities of the four-sided Buddhist statues were classified into three categories: first, those created in accordance with sutras; second, those consisting of Buddhas popular in those days; and third, those combing Buddhas according to sutras and Buddhas popular in those days.
Four-sided Buddhist statues belonging to the first category include the four-sided Buddhist statue on a stone pillar in the Tapkok Valley of the Sinin?sa Temple, which was created by the Divine Seal Sect, and the four-sided Buddhist statue on a stone pillar in Paju, which was created in the early or mid 10th century. Considering the arrangement of Buddha images carved on each side, the four-sided Buddhist statue in the Tapkok Valley of the Sinin?sa Temple is presumed to have been created based on Gwanbulsammaehaegyeong, and according to records in Samgukyusa, it was probably erected out of wishes for national defense. The arrangement and icons of images in the four-sided Buddhist statue on a stone pillar in Paju were found to coincide with the Buddhas in the Geumgang-line five-sided Buddhist statue in Byeoljonjapgi, showing that it was created based on Geumgangjeonggyeong.
Second, four-side Buddhist statues mostly consisted of four Buddhas popular in those days. In general, Medicine Buddha was carved on the east side, Amitabha Buddha on the west side, Shakyamuni Buddha or Vairocanna Buddha on the south side, and Maitreya Buddha on the north side. This arrangement is also found in the four-sided Buddhist statue on the Daean Pagoda (645) at the Jaeun?sa Temple in Xian, China and the four Buddhas in the Painting of the Buddhist Elysium in All Directions (late 7^(th) century) in the Buddha Hall of the Horyu?ji Temple in Japan, showing that the same form was popular in the three countries.
Third, four-side Buddhist statues based on both sutras and Buddhas popular in those days include the five-sided Buddhist statue at Chilbul?am, which was created in the mid or late 8th century. The statue is presumed to combine Bulgonggyeonobangbul translated by Buddhist craftsmen in the 8th century and Buddhas worshipped widely in those days.
As discussed above, the Unified Shilla Dynasty created new four-sided Buddhist statues by Buddhist images that they worshipped additionally to four-sided Buddhist statues erected steadily from the Period of the Three Kingdoms. Some of four-sided Buddhist statues followed the contents of sutras faithfully, but many of four-sided Buddhist statues formed a new style unique to the Unified Shilla Dynasty by deploying Vairocanna Buddha with the right hand grasping the left with the raised forefinger on the south side according to the Avatamsaka Sect and the Zen Sect imported during the Unified Shilla Dynasty.
