This paper aims to examine the Buddhist sijo that appeared in the early period of the modern sijo. This paper seeks to expand the amplitude of research by exploring it, including the fact that Buddhist materials and subjects are all reduced to Buddhist problems. Buddhist sijo are works created in a formalized form of Buddhist materials and ideas as a composite word of Buddhism and sijo. “Buddhism” is a religious domain, and “sijo” begins with the union of religion and literature, which is another dimension as a literary domain. The Buddhist sijo is a religious language derived from the fusion of Buddhism based on the moral culture and the integer sijo of a unique language
The sijo, who has a prolific Buddhist reason whose number cannot be specified in modern times, originated in the Joseon Dynasty. The beginnings of Buddhist sijo can be traced back to the middle of the Joseon era. The Joseon dynasty was opened with a cliff policy, and sacred science was a political idea. The founder of Buddhism was created by the sijo, nobleman, and only a few works remain. In this way, the Buddhist sijo that started from classical literature are the basis for judging that they are Buddhist ancestors depending on how the content is defined with the ancestral form as a caution.
Buddhist sijo with various Buddhist reasons have begun to appear in the modern ancestors" motives. Buddhist implications could be found in the spirit of the times expressed through the “Fourths of the Gukpung” by Nam-seon Choi, including “Blood Dead ” of the Daegu Martyrs, who became the progenitor of the modern sijo. After that, I saw the unique Buddhist spirit in the “"Cave Rock” tradition of Choi Nam-sung"s poetry collection “Hyakkaban-no-Brain”, which was the founder of modern sijo and had the first Buddhist thought. This paradoxically shows the fact that the early modern sijo needed the ancestral form as a passage for Buddhist reasons to express the traditional values of working in the inherent consciousness of our people.
For this reason, Chapter 2 made use of the zeitgeist and Buddhist consciousness of the modern sijo of the quickening period. Specifically, in Chapter 3, we looked into the Buddhist character of the early modern sijo in earnest. First, in the restoration of nationality and existential salvation, the founders of the modern sijo, Nam-seon Choi, Kwang-su Lee, and Yong-un Han, were explored. In this poem, along with Buddhist reasons, existential relief to restore ethnicity beyond despair for the loss of national rights was considered. Secondly, from the unique consciousness of the realization of tradition, we were able to discover the unique consciousness implemented in the tradition of "temple" through the founders of Lee Byung-gi, Lee Eun-sang, Ahn Jasna, and Sim-hoon. Third, before and after liberation due to fundamental representations and essential reasons, various and fundamental Buddhist aesthetics could be investigated by the sijo of Jung Inbo, Jo Un, and Cho Jong Hyun. In this period, Buddhist thought is represented by expanding the scope of Sijo with modern sensibility and literary diversity in short sijo and Yeonsijo as well as private Sijo.
