Since Joseon Dynasty opened its ports to foreign countries starting with the Ganghwado Treaty with Japan in 1876, the western countries that signed trade treaties with Joseon Dynasty began to dispatch diplomats to Korea. The diplomats not only served political and economic purposes, but were also tasked with collecting ethnological artifacts. The second half of the 19th century was the period when the ethnology was developed and museums of ethnology were established in the western countries. The Korean artifacts collected by those diplomats, merchants, and scholars who visited Korea formed Korean collections in the museums of ethnology in the western countries. These collections were intended to show the whole lives of Koreans. Most of the paintings in those collections described the open port, Korean folk, Musindo(巫信圖) and decorative folding screens in the residential spaces and It is notable that the paintings collections in the most of the ethnology museums have “Miindo” (a Bauty, 美人圖).
The estimated number of Miindo collected in the western museums is five. Miindo by Jo Joong-Mook(趙重默, 1820-?) in Grassi Museum of Ethnology in Leipzig, Germany, Miindo by Jo Jung-Mook in World Museum in Vienna, Austria, Miindo in Museum of Ethnology in Hamburg, Germany, Miindo in National Museum of Natural History Smithonian Institution, U.S.A. and Miindo in Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asiatic Arts, Hungary.
Although it is only five, it has important meanings. In this paper, I tried to reveal the purpose of collecting Miindo of the westerners by analyzing the collectors and the collecting process. In addition, I attempted to understand the painting’s period by analyzing the costumes of the figures and the style of the paintings by referring to the time when Miindo were collected. The three arguments I made in this paper are as followed.
First, the four out of the five paintings absent the one in Hof Ference East Asian Museum were painted around in the 1880s. They show the types and styles of the Korean Miindo in the 1880s. Referring to the period of the collection of the paintings by the westerners and the acquisition of each museum, it is possible to clearly set a period limit for the production of those paintings. In addition, by referring to the hairstyles and costumes of women at the paintings of Jo Jung-mooks in Grassi Museum of Ethnology in Leipzig, whose production date is known to be 1883, it is possible to estimate the production period of other beautiful figures.
Second, their focus in collecting Miindo was on ethnological values rather than aesthetic values. Möllendorf(1848-1901) classified Miindo as miscellaneous goods along with saddles and keys. Also Tilenius(1868-1937) and Bernado(1858-1908) mentioned aesthetic values only for Nakhwa(烙畫) and Wanghoedo(王會圖) in the paintings they collected. It seems that they did not pay attention to the aesthetic value of Miindo. Above all, the collecting purpose itself was a part of the westerners’ extensive collection of ethnology artifacts around the world in the second half of the 19th century.
Third, Miindo was collected by the western high-ranking officials in the field of diplomacy. Möllendorf, Haas(1847-1896), and Meyer(1841-1926) were diplomats representing each countries and were closely related to the Joseon Dynasty. Bernado was Allens escort, and Allen(1858-1932) was the personal doctor of King Gojong and a person who was involved in the diplomatic field of Joseon. Hope Ferrence East Asian Museum’ one is believed to be a painting that was exhibited at the 1900 Expo in Paris. It was exhibited by the royal family of the Korean Empire. Moreover, two of the paintings were the works of Jo Jung-mook who was the best painter of the time. Also the rest of the paintings were made with great care considering the detailed descriptions of facial expressions, costumes, hair, and accessories.
