忠南地方 一無醫村의 寄生蟲感染實態調査硏究 = Prevalence of Parasite Infection in Remote Area in Chungchongnamdo

This study was carried out to elucidate the present status of parasite infections in Onam-ri, situated along the upper Kumgang river, Chungchongnamdo, in 1973. Most of the inhabitants of this area are engaged in farming and living under lower economic and poor sanitary conditions.
In July, 203 of fecal samples were examined by direct smear method for the prevalence rate of intestinal helminths and intradermal test with veronal buffered saline antigens was employed in 174 for the prevalence rate of Clonorchis and Paragonimus. In December, another survey was undertaken concerning the incidence of Enterobius vermicularis by scotch-tape anal swab technique in 152.
The results are summerized as follows:
1. Of 203 fecal specimens examined, 117 (57.6%) were positive for intestinal parasites. Sexual distribution of the incidence showed slightly higher rate (58.7%) in female than that (56.2%) of male. The highest distribution (75.8%) was observed in the group of aging 5∼9.
2. As to species of parasite detected, each positive rate revealed; A. lumbricoides 48.8%, T. trichiurus 15.8%, Hookworm 2.0%, T. orientalis 0.9%, Taenia Sp. 2.0% and P. westermani 0.5%.
3. A single infection of intestinal parasite was as high as 80.3%. Double and triple infections were 18.0% and 1.7%, respectively.
4. Among 152 scotch-tape anal swabs examined, 71 (46.7%) showed positive for E. vermicularis. This worm infection still remains quite prevalently in this area.
5. Among 174 people examined by intradermal tests, 8.1% and 12.7% were positive reactions to clonorchis and paragonimus antigens, respectively. The highest positive rates were observed in the groups of aging over 50 in clonorchis and paragonimus. Five out of the 22 positive cases to paragonimus showed eggs in their sputum.
