A Qualitative Study of Administration of National Standard Educare Program and Eco-early Childhood Educare Program: A Comparative Approach to Daily Practice of Both Programs
The purpose of this study was to identify the daily lives of both teachers and children in child care settings running two different child care programs, national standard educare program and eco-early childhood educare program with comparative perspective.
The proposed research problems were; 1) what are the overall features and meanings of daily lives of teachers and children in the child care center running national standard educare program? 2) what are the overall features and meanings of daily lives of teachers and children in the child care center running eco-early childhood educare program?
The research methodology employed for this study was qualitative including participatory observation and in-depth interview. The research participants were teachers and children of ‘Yellow Class' of Y child care center and ‘Blue Class' of B child care center.
In findings, firstly, teachers and children of ‘Yellow Class’ were rigidly attached to the time frame built in the daily schedule of the classroom which were composed by 13 units compartmentalizing time and space per each unit. The core of the daily schedule was activities prepared by teachers in advance. The meanings of daily life of 'Yellow' classroom teacher were found in teaching children as observing good manners and being smarter. opening teaching and learning activities by themes of children's living world, keeping children engaged in a certain work. Teachers were always struggling to produce visible outcomes of children's daily activities to show them to their parents. In order to do that, teachers always made children to be ready to carry out ceratin task. Teachers were usually fell behind daily schedule for making up a lot of work to be done within the daily schedule so that they could easily be exhausted. The meaning of children of ‘Yellow Class’ were also found in their ‘busyness’. They were very busy finalizing works imposed by teachers given a short period of time, and they spent most of time moving their body one space to another within the classroom. They played with toys under rules set by teachers, and toys were mostly artificial.
Secondly, even though the daily schedule of 'Blue Class' consisted of 9 units, there were no rigidly defined use of time and space by each unit. In this setting, time and space were well integrated and daily activity was organized and practiced by children's interests. The meanings of daily life of ‘Blue Class’ teacher were found in cultivating children to play with vigor, helping children directly experience and unfold their lives. In the classroom, teachers usually waited to encourage children to be ready to do so. In this setting, teachers were playing and constantly moving their body all day long. Teachers ought to confirm outcomes of their daily activities because they want to see the essential changes of children's attitudes in making their lives. In addition, teachers of 'Blue' classroom needed to experience naturalistic medicine, healthy dietary habit and housing. Along with child caring, teachers also needed to conduct research which led them to living in a long day. In fact, eco-centered life also create exhausting daily schedule for teachers as well. The meanings of children's daily lives of 'Blue Class' were found in ‘playing freely’ without recognition of must-do-things and time constrains. They usually played freely outside of the door. And they voluntarily created toys with various materials which could be found around them. Therefore, most of toys that they made were naturalistic materials.
The results of this study revealed that even though there were explicit discrepancies existed between the planning and the practicing national standard child educare program, the practice of eco-early childhood educare program comparatively well managed according to the principle of eco-early childhood educare program.
Based on these results, this research came to draw three points of discussion and alternatives in the following.
Firstly, the researches on the theories and practices of child care program should reflect the realities of child care center. Child care practice should not be constructed as goal-oriented or content-oriented which means that teachers should not create a series of lesson plan and provide them repetitively just to achieve the purpose of child care program. Instead, it would be much better for children if teachers practice programs and give lessons which are connected to children's lives and their daily lives under the principles of nature.
Secondly, child care program should be able to cause fundamental change in children's lives. Above all, it must pursue the revitalization of both teachers and children. For this, it might be required to speculate children as beneficiaries of child care in other way than before and find how to make children truly happy.
Third, teachers should be allowed to actively participate in choosing chilld care program. At the same time, they make continuous efforts to restructure their child care practices and children's lives. Instead of taking micro perspective, by taking macro perspective teacher could be able to draw a vivid picture which contains more significant observations and reflections of the daily life structures of teachers and children. Such macro perspective to view the child care program would help teachers obtain observation and reflections which could be an integral part of retraining in-service teachers.
Based on the findings and the discussions, limitations of this study and suggestions for future study were drawn.
First, this study was conducted in only two child care settings that are respectively providing the national and eco-early childhood educare program for child care center, so its findings are somewhat difficult in explaining daily activities by teachers and children from similar settings where the two curriculum are being applied. Subsequent studies need to focus more on child care settings which are providing the national and eco-early childhood educare program for child care center and different from each other in the extent of the provision.
Second, this study is limited because it is a qualitative research which is subjective. Findings of the study should be compensated by subsequent study which employes quantitative research methodology.
Third, this study just investigated daily activities of teachers and children in child care centers where the national and eco-early childhood educare program. In other words, the study didn't examine how the orientation of each of the program was affecting such activities and how teachers' demographic variables were influencing the daily operation of each of the program. Subsequent study needs to work on biological or socio-cultural variables that may affect the national and eco-early childhood educare program for child care center.
