With the enhancement of ultra-low power wireless devices such as wireless sensor nodes, IoT devices, and implant devices, energy harvesting is gaining more attention and is actively being studied. Energy harvesting is the process of continuously extracting a small amount of energy from the ambient environment (light, heat, vibration, wind, biological, etc.). This type of technology enables small electrical systems to operate without the necessity of changing or recharging conventional batteries. Improving micro-power devices could allow them to wirelessly obtain power by harvesting energy directly from the environment.
As energy harvested using this method is unstable due to constant changes in the environment and situation, supplying a load with stable and constant power is critical. To harvest energy more efficiently, the reduction of needed power and maximum power point tracking (MPPT) are required, and energy harvesting circuits needs to be able to operate at sufficiently low-voltages in order to adapt to a given environment and situation. In this dissertation, various energy harvesting circuits using photovoltaic, thermal, and vibration energy for micro energy harvesting are proposed.
In the first research, a full-wave rectifier (FWR) is used for micro-vibration energy harvesting. The performance of the three different types of FWRs has been compared and analyzed, and a high performance FWR with vibrational detection is proposed. Conventional output-powered active FWRs consume power from the harvested energy even when the system is not harvesting any energy. To overcome this problem, a technique using a simple vibration detector consisting of a peak detector and a level converter is proposed. The vibration detector identifies whether vibrational energy exists at the input terminal and disables the FWR if there is no vibrational energy. The proposed FWR with the vibration detector is designed using a 0.35-µm CMOS process. The measurement results show that the proposed FWRs input signals with amplitudes in the range of 1.4–3.3 V with a maximum power efficiency of 97% and voltage efficiency over 99%. The rectifier can operate with input signals in the frequency range of 5–10 kHz. Compared to a rectifier without the vibrational detection, the leakage current is decreased by approximately 20 times by using the proposed vibration detector.
In the second research, two types of single-input energy harvesting interface circuits, one using photovoltaic energy and the other using thermal vibration energy, are used. The first circuit is an energy harvesting circuit with MPPT control. The circuit operates in an active/sleep mode to overcome the power mismatch between the energy transducer and the load applications. Experimental results confirmed correct circuit operation and demonstrated the performance of the proposed MPPT scheme. The circuit achieved a peak power efficiency of more than 93%, and an MPPT accuracy of more than 90%. The second circuit is a DC-DC boost converter for thermoelectric energy harvesting. The designed converter boosts the output voltage through a start-up block from a low-output voltage of a thermoelectric device, and the boosted VDD is used to operate the internal control block. Experimental results show that the designed converter generates 2.9 V from an input voltage of 200 mV, and its maximum power efficiency is 46%. The proposed two circuits were implemented using a 0.35 μm CMOS.
In the third research, two types of multi-input energy harvesting interface circuits are used. The first circuit is an auto-switching energy harvesting circuit using vibration and thermoelectric energy. The proposed circuit monitors the outputs of a thermoelectric generator and a piezoelectric generator and chooses the energy source generating a higher output voltage using an auto-switching controller. Then the circuit harvests the maximum power from the selected device using an MPPT controller. The proposed circuit has been verified through experimentation. The second circuit is a triple-input energy harvesting circuit using photovoltaic, vibration, and thermoelectric energy with MPPT control. This circuit can individually harvest energy without a loss in output energy regardless of the type of energy source. Experimental results show the start-up time to operate the load is reduced, and triple-input energy harvesting can supply harvested energy for longer periods of time than single-input energy harvesters. The two proposed circuits were implemented using a 0.35 μm CMOS.
The last research uses a low-voltage and low-power energy harvesting circuit. A bulk-driven technique is applied in the circuit to operate at the low-voltage level of the MOSFET threshold voltage. In addition, the circuit harvests the maximum power from the selected device using the simple MPPT controller. The proposed circuit was implemented using a 60 nm CMOS process. Experimental results confirmed correct circuit operation and demonstrated the performance of the proposed MPPT scheme. The circuit achieved a peak power efficiency of 93% and an MPPT accuracy of more than 99%.
The proposed circuits are expected to be more efficient at energy harvesting and better at supplying stable power to the target application such as an ultra-low power sensor node in the changing environment.
